Ever feel guilty when you throw away that last little dollop of Ivermectin in the tube after worming your horses?? Well, I do...Ms. Tightwad here! Just take a bit on your thumb and gently grasp your horse's ear and rub the remainder in each ear.
Here in the worst breeding ground for parasites in the country, we have an epidemic of ear mites all year round, and I always despaired about getting rid of them and keeping them gone.
Finally my dear man who was a wildlife biologist for 20 some years mentioned kind of offhandedly that they used to shoot the remaining injectable Ivermectin into the animal's ears after worming the bighorn sheep and muledeer. I said, "What??? You never told me this before?" and since I had a few tubes with some left in them, I took and rubbed some into my worst mare's ears. This poor dear would scratch her ears on the t-posts and nothing I tried worked...for very long anyway. Overnight her ears have improved...not only does it kill the mites but it also moisturizes the crusty linings of the ears!
