I have been advised to feed FlaxSeed to help with Q's acute allergic reaction to the cullicoides (tiny gnat/bugs).

Late last summer she was miserable. She rubbed hair off her face, neck, chest, shoulders and belly. She turned two small Pecan trees into belly-high scratching stubs and rubbed her belly raw. She even shortened her forelock to above her eyes from rubbing her face.

I thought I'd try Anti-Hist, but I just read a remark about how it should not be used for any length of time.

May I have thoughts, ideas and remedies to help Q through this coming bug-season? I use a good fly spray, but if she gets bit, she has the itchy reaction. I need something to alleviate the itch.

The remark was not to give cough medicine on a regular basis, though. I don't know if she meant AniHist, or if she though I gave cough medicine... I have my vet coming out later this week, so I'll check with her, then I'll check with the HC vet too. Better safe than sorry ;-)

Absolutely! ...I just want Q to have a better summer this year. She was so miserable last year, poor girl.

I completely understand that, I even had my horse on Dex -rather than see him loose weight because he couldn't focus on anything beside itching long enough to eat. The few flies we have here already started to bother him, but that too seems much better since I started the anihist... I hope I can continue, I don't want to have to put him on Dex again.

My allergy mare stays on Benadryl most of the summer. She gets itchy just from the humidity....I've tried everything but needed something my husband could easily do....It's cherry flavored and I just top her feed with it....I think she got 10 cc Is that right? I have to check the cup. She got it twice a day.....hopefully she'll make out better this year, but I'm all for the relief....she's not bred and i don't give it to her right before we go riding.
