I got him to my regular vet.

She looked at the other vets x-rays, checked him over thoroughly and says she see's NO sign of laminitis.

He does have white line disease, the farrier used a dremel & only had to dig about 1/3 inch to get to good hoof. It was then packed with the cream hardner that goes with bondo (it has a high peroxide count) packed with cotton then reshod. Luckily he didn't have to have any hoof wall removed.

The vet says he is to be shod every 4weeks and to be AGGRESSIVE about removing toe to help get him upright. He's now on a maintenance dose of bute, 1/2 gram am & pm.

He was 85% better today. Yee haw.

However, she does expect him to be rested for about 5 months.

I guess Nieve & Favio will now have to earn their keep.

PS
This was a shortened version of all the conversations that went on between the vet, myself & the farrier.

I so pi$$ed at the 1st quack (I mean vet). Not only did he miss diagnose but he charged double for x-rays then the 3 other vets I called charge. A$$hole!!!!

I'm glad he's getting better! Too bad about all that time and $$ wasted. There's a guy in our trailriding group that just put $4000 into vet charges - went through 2 vets before the 3rd vet (Listo's vet) got the problem taken care of  What a racket!!

Grandma's glad he's on the road to recovery, too! White line is strongly associated with long toe/low heel syndrome, so YES< get those toes off, angles up!
Jump on your farrier too....he should be paying part of that vet bill!

Stella,
I can't blame the farrier. I used him for years, then he had some famly issues and was out of the business for a while.

I went thru 4 farriers, none that I liked (over a 4 yr period).

I finally called my old guy back, he's back doing business. He has been working on angles. But in all honesty I let him go too long between shoeings It wouldn't bother a normal hoof, but didn't work for Caliente)

This is my fault and no-one elses. My regular vet actually gave me a break on fees just because the quack I delt with.

I have since interviewd alternate vets. I think I found a good one. I have told BOTH vets that with 10 horses here I will share the gravy (shots. coggins, teeth etc.). If they are willing to share the grief (emergancy calls, late night calls etc).

Hopefully, I'm good to go no matter what happens. We have had our share of vet bills this past 6 months. But it could be worse. We lost an old horse, but his time had come. Unfortunatly Caliente is Donalds "ride". He keeps wanting to ride Favio (Stella's other grandson by Favorito). Favio will be incredibly disgusted about having to work for a living. :cry
