I'm going to take new pictures tomorrow and I hope you all that know palominos might beable to share your opinion. Her gold hair around her mouth, nose and starting around her eyes is coming out and the hair there is very very dark :-? .I was hoping so much for a cream or golden color and had my heart set on it but ofcourse i'll love her the VERY SAME if she sheds out chocolate.Anyway i'll go for now and email pictures tomorrow.Moniece

You won't really know till she is two.... They generally shed out the darkest they will ever be, on the first weanling age shed. Then, they generally go back to pale in their first fall & winter...then, the next spring... if they still shed out dark..you *probably* have one...but by age two, you will know for sure....!
Looks like I will have a dark, smutty palomino with Dante...his coat was so PALE this winter, but he is starting to shed off now, and the hair is DARK, Dark !!
We should compare pics! I'll try to get some tomorrow...from the time he was born until today. Your filly(when she was first born) looks just like he did when he was born...he will be two this spring... ;-)

I think they change over time too. My best friend has a chocolate here, and he's almost brown in the winter. His own ex-owner didn't recognize him, he'd gotten so dark.
Don't worry Moniece...if she turns out to be chocolate, you can almost name your price on her....and buy a coulple golden ones. LOL
All this talk about gorgeous colored horses

Indeed!!! I sure wouldn't complain about a Choco-pally! Its such a striking color, and really not that common.
I'll tell ya (and Stella remembers me agonizing over this) when Cascabel was little, she sure took her time letting her true color out. she had so much blonde in her mane, and the dark on her legs didn't come in for many months.. I was really hoping she'd be a chestnut after all. But by the time she revealed her bay-ness, I was so in love with her she could have been chartreus (sp?) and I'd never part with her!!!

I have never seen a picture of a true chocolate (silver dapple) mature Paso Fino. I didn't know they came in that color. Can someone post one?

Moniece, the pictures of War Song were taken when he was younger, he is lighter now. I want to see a picture of a mature Paso that is chocolate.

Oh my fault Barb sorry.I just saw the picture of him bigger with that dark body and white mane and tail and thought that was his final color.I'll have to go back and see if I can find him in his final color so I can see his lighter color.WOW from so light to so dark to so light to so dark again and back....these palomino light to dark changes amazes me and i'm eager to get in there and learn about it!!Your paso friend,Moniece

Barb...its NOT silver dapple gene in the Paso Finos...it is smut gene turning the palomino darker...which ususally includes some black hairs in the mane & tail. I have a photo of (a mature) one...be back to post it...

This is Alondra...I "suspect" she was a chocolate (smutty) palomino...but I only have a black & white newspaper clipping....
Perhaps someone here saw Alondra when she was being shown years ago and can confirm?

Warsong is a gorgeous horse, but as a one year old... wow! His color was awesome!

Here is Judi's gelding Rojo in a 2004 parade. He is about 8 here. He seems to do this just the opposite, he gets darker every year. His earlier owner didn't even recognize him in her pasture, he had gotten so dark.

Rojo looks like a golden...maybe just a hair darker than a golden.
True golden is the Palomino association's "preferred" color. They don't like "smutty" palominos, or black hair in the mane & tail...they like what they call "clean" golden color...
I figure since Dante's mother was liver chestnut (smutt gene makes red chestnut turn liver) that he got that smutt gene and it may take a year or two to develop completely.
Does Judi show that horse Carol?
CarolU

No, Rojo is her 'guest horse'....he's a safe horse anyone can ride and very easy going. He's been herding cattle this winter under a friend of Judi's...wowing a LOT of cowboys on their Quarter Horses. He's the slowest laid-back Paso we know...but still rearing to go - at least compared to QH's! LOL It's one of those cases where his flat walk drives us nuts, but he flies past QH's...
He worked over 200 head of cows all fall.
