What treatment have ya'll used for a high fever??? Bute, Banamine???I have a 1200 lb horse that has been running a fever for the last two nights...104.5 last night and then 106.2 tonight...we got it down to 103.4...after using a bute and a shot of banamine about 2 hours before...the vet says there is a virus going around...He's eating all right..He also has a swollen fetlock...don't really think it's connected but who knows?????

Good question. I have never had to treat an equine fever...how do you treat that?

I think I would have the vet come out...a swollen limb + a fever may mean more than a virus is going on. There may be a bacterial infection in the swollen limb...
I usually don't worry about a fever unless it gets really high, as the fever is the body's natural way to fight infection, or a virus. The age of the horse matters, too; if it is a young horse I am more likely to have the vet out. You are in PA, maybe letting the horse out into the cool air may help bring his temp down...but I would insist the vet come out before I do anything.

usually Banamine under the advice of the vet.I dont think Bute really does much for fevers?.I think there is another injectible that we used on the Potomac Fever horses along w/ Banamine but cannot remember the name ..also thinking they took it off the market a few years ago.

That is dipyrone, and it was WONDERFUL, but it was rtemoved from the market, something about cows....
My vet here in CA has Dipyrone made by a company specially for him and he uses it just for horses...

For a high fever like that you alternate banamine and bute. Both will bring a fever down. Banamine is better but you cannot give it more than every 12 hours. So, banamine, wait six hours, bute, wait six hours, banamine. And make sure that your horse is drinking plenty of water!!! If it has been two days and the fever is not down soon, I would have the vet out ASAP.
