we have a wildfire about a mile away. I knew something was happening as there are news helicopters flying nearby hovering. There was alot of smoke earlier this afternoon that blew this away...so that must of been what got away. we are dry... thing is that is the direction of 'our' nuclear plant. I figured there had been another security lapse and was expecting to hear that on the news ... not a fire! It would have to jump a two lane paved road to come this way. There is timbered land that way also, bet someone was burning the stumps and debree.......

wish us well..... at least it is not windy today!!!

That sounds scary. Keep us posted.

There was a blazing fire in NW Miami last night. They had the TurnPike shut down for awhile b/c the smoke was so thick.

They just had more on the news. It is 25 acres on fire between two main roads but also adjacent to the Nuclear Plant that serves Raleigh area. They have planes now dropping water on the fire, which is still flaming! the plane noise has picked up. Glad I don't live any closer...close enough if I can see all the helicopters and planes! My farm is surrounded by woodland, but the barn and house has open area/fields around it!!!

I'll say a prayer for you, Lynn...I know what it's like. :(
We got about an inch and a half to two inches of rain the other night...we need a lot more, but that was welcome...and enough to lift the burn ban for awhile.

We will be thinking of you all and watching the news. I fear fire around here in these woods. They have a lot of controlled burns around Falls Lake, and those can sometimes get out of control. If it is near Sherron-Harris Nuclear Power plant, I am sure that extra zeal will go into getting that under control.

Of course, you know Arianna will start having that foal if the fire gets near you. But, it is not going to get that close; they will stop it before then.

Lynn,

Hope it all works out. Please do keep us posted. We don't get fires like that around here but I can imagine it's unsettling to be so close to one.

It was a pretty amazing site to see! They had these huge planes that I could see come up low over the tree line and then they would just make a dive. These were the planes that were carrying water to drop down on the fires. It had on the news they were scooping the water out of the lake that is around the nuclear plant. Anyway, it was supposed to be a controlled burn by the forest service that got out of control. The thing is it did get pretty close to some residences on the other isde of the road from me. I'd have been packing up my most valuable possesions to make a run. The news helicopters backed off and were hovering over my farm when the water planes were doing there runs. So here I am contemplating in an emergency like that, what to do with the horses. I can't haul them all out in the stock trailer. :(

When the helicopters departed and I couldn't hear any more planes flying, I felt it must have been under control.......... well it shows even a controlled burn on a day not windy can get out of control when the conditions are so dry. Everyone stay safe! They had on the news our area have been on the dry side since 2000.

I know the feeling! We still haven't gotten any rain here, and just the other day 300 acres...more probably, didn't watch the news...burned up less than a mile from us. The black smoke was terrible.
I am not liking how this year is starting.

On the 11 pm news, they said the runaway fire scorched 60 acres, and there would be people watching it overnight where it had been burning.

There was another "supposed" controlled burn a month or so ago in the other direction, and I have never seen so much smoke and fire in the sky. I felt that one got loose too and it WAS a windy day. That fire didn't have much to keep it from jumping the more narrow road which would have then approached right up to my property. I called 911 on that one...it was really scary to see!

Its DRY alot of places!!!

Lynn,

One motto I live by is to always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. It might be a good idea to look into what you really would do if there was ever a forced evacuation. How many horses do you have? What DO people do when that happens....besides leave them that is.
