i have to tell you about the people who shipped my mare totoa from minnesota to the missouri/arkansas border for me.
my mare is not a very trusting soul. an abuse case before the donoso's purchased her. i then bought her from them 5 years ago. however, she has been know to come unglued in an emergency situation if i'm not around. she has earned her nickname of the "Dragonqueen"
so i started looking for shippers and probably talked to almost 20 of them and my request to ride with their driver while she was shipped pretty much fell on deaf ears.
until i ran into marshall and kim watchinski of owensville, missouri and their driver, jerry huber.
marshall and kim own Pure Pleasure Horse Transport.
their driver, jerry was picking up a colt and a filly in Lancaster, which is only 8 miles from the candian border. a 7 month old PMU colt that was going to florida and an 18 month old paint filly who was going to little rock, arkansas.
let me tell you. there are people who haul horses and then there are people who enjoy doing it and treat your horses like one of their own.
jerry picked up totoa and i and we left verndale appr 2pm. we stopped every four hours to check on horses. only jerry doesn't just fill water and hay bags. at every stop he talked to both colts, checked on their well being and was very observant as to how each was handling the ride. we traveled until 1am and then rested until 7am.
after conferring with marshall, they decided that the 7 month old PMU baby needed a break to be unloaded since he was still headed to florida. he was handling the ride very well but they felt it was necessary. by the time we got to marshall & kim's home base, i was very glad we had decided to unload because my mare had just started to develop shakey knees.
marshall and kim's barn all had stalls that were freshly bedded and plenty of water and hay waiting. there was genuine concern for how each horse was handling the trip and how long the layover period should be. the PMU baby actually was handling it better than my mare was.
i then met marshall and kim. what an experience! i didn't feel like a guest in their home, i felt like i was a long lost relative that they hadn't seen in years and they made me feel more than welcome. offered me a shower and feed me dinner. we laughed and joked around their table like we had done it for years.
every now and then you run into people like this and since they don't toot their own horn, you try to do it for them. i hope one day to have totoa home again and if i do, there is only one phone call i will make.
