Stella's words
Ok, its perfectly possible HISTORY was made today, St. Louis Missouri was supposed to have a gaited dressage class last week, but I havent found out yet, if a Paso Fino participated, or not...working on it....
But if not, I had the dubious distinction of riding FIRST in the preliminary A test this am, before 9am, as the Tennessee Walking Horse scheduled first scratched (and was the only scratch)....so I just MIGHT have been the FIRST person to ever show a Paso Fino in dressage.....AS A PASO FINO!
(there used to be a couple that actually trained their horses to trot and showed "regular," in the 80s/early 90s)
There were 5 in the class, and I rode Angelica del Reino, last daughter of my ole Top Ten Sire, Favorito que tal,to win it, and she's "American," 7/8 Colombian, 1/8 Cuban. Painted Horizon came in second on my mare, Rita de Trebol, full Colombian(sire Trebol is by Caruso de la Ate, and La Ligia linebred; dam old que tal lines, Lunares.)
The B preliminary test was won by Mike Prevatt, on a Pure Puerto Rican gelding, so ALL the bases were covered! (there were either 5 or 6 entries in that class)I will have to get a complete list of entries.
Both the show manager(and owner)and the judge, were very pleased with the turnout of entries(only ONE person, Mike, rode both A and B)
and also, with the performances. (of course, most of us got together 2 weeks ago and had a group practice session! To make sure Pasos made a GOOD impression!)
The judge was somewhat familiar and had ridden a paso before, and was extremely complimentary and helpful. From what I could overhear, the spectators - in particular, a group of "showmoms" were also very impressed, and paid careful attention to the SMOOTHNESS of rides, and how the Pasos worked so lightly on their feet, relative to other gaited breeds, and how well they worked off the hindquarters. I wont be surprised if next year, some of the youth exhibitors wont be grooming for their moms on Pasos!
Since I only live about 1.5 miles from this show, I went home- not too long after our classes(gotta shoot the breeze ALITTLE with buddies!), did some chores(also, some Pasopeople spectators that'd never been, stopped at the farm for a tour)..and went back later, to watch the last most advanced classes, and also THANK the judge....who was MOST ENTHUSIASTIC, and asked many questions to LEARN MORE about our gaits, and if other exhibitors were pleased...(were they ever!)
Also, it turns out the SC Dressage Judges' clinic before next season will be on this farm, so I have been invited to bring some horses, and give a demonstration, provide some education, and field questions for the dressage judges so that they can familiarize themselves with our breed better........YAY! I am SO very happy they are NOT going to try to make our breed look like a generic dressage horse, but allow us to retain "type" in general frame and way of going.
Two horses did show in bosal, which I explained most people schooled in INSTEAD of a snaffle, and it went over VERY WELL.....not only the judge, but I overheard several spectators make note, and WERE IMPRESSED with that bitless concept!
I guess the biggest criticism by the judge was, that so many horses found it difficult to free walk totally freely, relaxed....of course, part of that was because - the horses were green and nervous, and so were WE! (well, Iwasnt that nervous, I was just still asleep, not enough coffee yet, and it was drizzling during MY ride, sun later)
We did have some applause and cheering from OTHER that PFPeople, and I have this feeling that, being I put an article about these classes in a VERY popular NEW local free newspaper publication, "The Aiken Horse,"(by the 3rd issue was 2 huge sections, 70pp) , that comes out this week, with the REST of the show schedule for the year, I am expecting there to be MORE curious spectators coming to watch! AND, more people participating in the classes, too!
What I think ALL of the exhibitors liked best, was not the ribbons so much, but the test sheet each one got after to take home, with not only the scores for each and every section of the test(each has a description too)BUT THE COMMENTS BY THE JUDGE for each section, both on the strong points of the performance, and what errors were made and improvements needed to correct them, and then an overall critique, that is then signed by the judge.
I think alot of people, particularly A/Os, ESPECIALLY in areas with few PF shows or trainers, would find this kind of showing MUCH MORE helpful in improving their own riding and communication skills,as well as their horse's performance and discipline, for just about ALL other activities they do with their horse.
It was a blast!!! Even if it WAS raining during our part!!!
Stella, that is TOO awesome about them wanting you to do that thing with the Judge's clinic! I say a huge resounding YES!!!! I'll help anyway I can!! And by next February, I should know more too!
I was so happy to get second! But what REALLY made my day was JACOB (my 19 mth old son) RODE HIS VERY FIRST HORSE EVER TODAY!!!!!!!!!! My mom came from NC to watch the show and Jacob and after my ride, I told her to stick him on the saddle while I held Rita. He did great! Just kinda sat there like...um...okay. So I told her to go ahead and pull him off, didn't want Rita to do something to scare him. So untacked her and we went to watch the rest. Well, then we went back and I got my camera and mom put him up on Rita again while she was tied to the trailer and I took a bunch of pictures!!! I'm so ecstatic!!!!!!! Can you tell?
Professional PICS!
