Barbecue meats linked with prostate cancer ....

compound formed when meat is charred at high temperatures -- as in barbecue -- encourages the growth of prostate cancer in rats, We stumbled across a new potential interaction between ingestion of cooked meat in the diet and cancer in the rat,"

now all I can pitcure is a bunch of RATS standing at the grill cooking hot dogs.

I know , I know , the study is important, but It kind of gets to me that they test all this stuff, soon we will be eatting, leaves.

I guess why I get upset is one year they tell us something is bad, then the next year it is not bad it was all a mistake.

Erin,

I think last year's tests proved that leaves are bad for you, too. :rofl

It does seem like the conclusions change every day doesn't it.

But as far as barbecue is concerned, for years smoked meats have been linked to cancer and in fact two friends of the family had a restaurant that specialized in smoked meats and they both died young of stomach cancer.

One study said to just eat tomato with your bacon and you'll be fine because the tomato has cancer preventing stuff in it. Maybe that's why many barbecue sauces are tomato based. Vinegar is supposed to be really good for you too. So you just mix the good with the bad and eat a variety of stuff and don't worry about it. Probably the three most important things that keep you healthy are first good genes, second don't smoke and third exercise (45 minutes of hard exercise per day is the ideal but that includes cleaning stalls!) - particularly walk or bike, which keeps your weight where it should be and relieves stress.

People are living longer but some of that is the ability of medical science to fix us up. We pretty much worry about the wrong things anyway. For young adults if I recall correctly auto accidents and suicide are the big killers - and we worry about thing like snake bites and sharks! For kids it's probably auto accidents and accidents in the home like poisonings, accidental shootings and so on.

You never know what's liable to get you anyway so we do the best we can and have fun!!

I am so sick of all these studies. One day eggs are bad and cause high cholorosteral (Not sure I spelled that right)then the next month after the egg producers bribed enough politicians, eggs are good for you. Then look at coffee ....do you all remember when everyone was told coffee is bad for you.

I say BS to all their studies. I will eat whatever I want to and drink whatever I want to. I am 65 years old and have been smoking since I was 12. If I die of cancer so what who in the H cares how I die. I say enjoy yourself and if it makes you happy or feel better then have a blast and eat or drink anything you want to. BTW I also drink Vodka every day.

JMHO :D :D :D :D :D

prostate cancer? Hmmmm, doesn't sound like my problem. maybe that is why my hubby doesn't like to do the grilling. I always thought it was because he didn't like to cook.

You know, we're all going to get sick and die someday. And as much as we all might WANT to blame it on something, it is a fact of life. No one gets out alive.

Personally, I consider everything after my appendectomy at 15 to be my gift from modern medicine. So, I'm on borrowed time and can't complain about anything.

Thinking of modern medicine,

How many of our mothers couldn't even have gotten pregnant with us?
How many of us would have died before delivery?
How many of childhood illnesses?
How many of bad infections?
How many from crack-pot cures?

The list goes on.

We are all VERY lucky to live when we do...and if barbecued meat really kills people, how did our hunter-gatherer ancestors live long enough to reproduce? Because really most of us should have died LONG before the effects of Bubba's Bar-B-Que has a chance. LOL

In this, Erin, as in all things, MODERATION is the key.

Yes, there are studies that indicate that barbecued meats cause cancer. (I thought it was in the stomach ... but what do I know?) But the thing is, it isn't going to get you if you don't eat barbecued meats five times a week!

it was proven long ago that eating any meat at all increases the chance of getting cancer.
I love life too much, don't plan on dieing of anything till i'm at least 150.

Barbecueing meats does cause the formation of carcinogenic compounds you will eat with that meat. Whereas, if you fried it in a pan, you don't get those. I think that is what the study will be referring to...the excess carcinogens caused by high temperature BBQ's.

Its like the same reason you don't want to get dirty motor oil on your hands..it is carcenogenic. Years ago NO mechanics I knew ever wore nitrile gloves...now many do, I also wear them sometimes at work when doing engine failure evaluations. You don't want dirty motor oil on your horse's hooves either..years ago that was a "popular" thing to do...but now we know that as the motor oil is ran in the engine, it gets gasoline, copper, and other heavy metals in it from wear...making it carcenogenic.

Hey Bob...the other day...I heard on the news, that coffee makes you smarter!! The caffine stimulates the brain and keeps it more active...pretty quick here, I figure I'll be a GENIUS...I already have about 4 cups a day...have I only to up it to 10 or so to reach genius??? :D

Couldnt agree more Bob! Good for you! Life is too short anyways to be miserable and worry 24/7

No one gets out alive. Carol that just cracked me up!!

I dunno about that..I get quite stressed just thinking about it
