only one sleepless night again...and darn if I didn't miss the birth by about 30 minutes at 5:00 am. Emperador La Estrella x Beech Tree Majatisa announce the birth of a big strapping colt. Photos to come later today. Both mom and bambino are fine. There is a surprise though!
later...I'm going to catch some snoozes.
P.S. yep jeany and grayson Brio has a little brother. No excuse now not to come visit and see the 3 bambinos/-as. ;-) That's 3 colts and 3 fillies for me this year and last with my E babies. One more to foal later this summer.

The surprise must be the color.....let's see Maja is a dun, E is a grulla. Not an endless number of possibilities.

That's rough. if he gaits like his daddy, I like Mariachi for him. But I think Majo is a nice way to pay tribute to his dam.
Hmm...no Macaroni on that list! ;-) Being a 'noodle' I think that is a cute name! LOL

OK thought I love Mango's, almost my fav food. Not a good name for a horse, all I can think of is the snl character!

I'm back from town and some people breakfast (mcD's) and will try to get a few pics.
hint, hint......just say he is a throwback and totally unexpected.
Won't be a Get of Dam class with last year's colt Brio and this one...not likely. And Jeany you thought Brio was a big baby. Just wait.
And poor mama has had had her ventral (milk?) abdominal veins so engorged the past week or more along each side.... and a very big tight bag. She could hardly walk yesterday morning, and didn't want to hardly try. She was about to pop this guy out.
okay I'll get some pics for ya.

not to pressure you or be obnoxious or anything, but we are waiting!
By the way, I told Brio he has a new brother, and he held his nose out for a kiss. I think that meant, "So what? How about a kiss?"
Ohh...I am hoping it is a black colt!

Jeany, you're being impatient and silly...always check the Gracewood farm website first! I have to load the pics somewhere and I don't have a separate photo loading site...
Okay here is the first not half day old yet pics on first out of stall outing around noonish. Bright sun's shadows are overhead......

Was it worth the wait? for my Black Beauty!!!!!!!!
No white anywhere.
So he's a throwback to 2 BLACK greatgranddams (maternal and paternal)the famous Guala (true black) and also a PFHA Top Ten Dam Lakehart Tiffany (Don Cunda and Cafila que tal/Sin Verquenza). Nah I would have never imagine a black black colt...like this from a strong zebra dun and a grulla. Emperador has produced black before from a black and from a grulla.

To look at him, you'd think he was unreal. His legs are longer looking in person then these photos. Now Emperador has been putting on long legs, but these are the longest I've ever seen. He's got to be a throwback to an ancestor I am thinking and Yes he will stay black..his baby body hair is the blackest I have seen in a foal.
Sire: Emperador's pedigree
http://www.pasoregistry.com/db/Tree.asp?ID=73581
Dam: Beech Tree Majatisa's pedigree
http://www.pasoregistry.com/db/Tree.asp?ID=97895
I may need to look up a few more ancestors and see pics. Anyone got any of these less known ancestors shown that would be extra leggy. The colt is like 31/32nd colombian. Only PR is Marichal who I have seen and rode in person.
And yes, he is gaiting on those long legs...its fun (and funny) to watch him go... as it does look like he is on stilts, but he just rather glides along...
I'm happy with him even if he wasn't a girl. Got one filly this year and possibly one more...she's not terribly huge, so most likely a girl.

First of all, Congratulations. What a handsome boy.
Lakeheart Tiffany was very black...and Majestuoso was very tall. Perhaps that is where it is coming from.
Faldero was also dark, but I don't think as black as Tiffany.
But, whereever it came from, it is great!

Wow, he is stunning. I can't beleive how tall he is. When my foal was born she could walk right under Mama's belly. There is no way he could do that!!
LynnG
04-26-2006, 01:06 AM
sporthorse, this may be my future CTR horse. I've been waiting for the right one to come along. Look at his shoulder angle and those long legs should reach and move right along.
Baileyholc, you can have first dibbs if I let him go. I've always wanted a really black Paso Fino. In the past, I can't tell you how many times I;ve bred to a black and 99% of the time I got something else. I had at one time a herd full of red bay horses. I love red bays but some variety is nice to look at!
Jan, do you know any more about Tiffany and was she shown? I had seen her sire Don Cunda, and also Majestuoso when he first was imported...he did a fabulous demo at the Wichita Nationals and then again not long before he died in the early 1990's. I saw Flint Oak Mai Tai once when she had my mare as a baby. I was looking at Mai Tai to buy and decided I liked the baby better, and eventually got the baby a year later...my Maja.
I had bred a mare back in early 1980's when faldero stood in NC one season and have some pics of him :D . He was registered brown, but more of a fading black with some browner points. He was an impressive horse about 14.2, and I do have one pic of him where he looks pretty black at a show in Tryon NC.
Nisharox, so y'all coming to visit this saturday or sunday and you can see al three? Magico is shedding and funky looking right now as he has some skinned up places. go figure an adventuresome colt like himself. I don't think Brio would know what to think of his mom having another baby, same as with marisa when brio came along. she got depressed and pushed mean-ly away from mom her best friend.
I'll see how the colt color changes...looking at him this afternoon..his body is coal black, but on his inner legs is slightly more of the silverish black you usually see on black babies.wehn born..and I believe I can see some primitive markings. He should have them even if disguised by black, since both parents have them and mom is very strong with them.
okay I had a fun day. back to the grind stone tommorrow.
Thanks for the congratulations! I got my black colt!!!

Lynn,
All I know about Tiffany is when I used to see her at Royal Oak all the time. She was a very pretty mare and had some nice babies. The last I heard she had moved to Florida with her owner. She wasn't being shown when I knew her, just having babies.
Your colt looks even nicer the second day. He is very striking.

Question, what do you mean by throwback :?:

04-26-2006, 07:09 PM
Listo's dam was a bay, and sire was a black/white pinto, so was grandpa. His black gene was pretty far back - but he fathered a pure black baby with a bay mare :-?
I think it's kind of like that - but I could be wrong
LynnG
04-26-2006, 08:50 PM
PH....."Throwback" for a certain trait to an ancestor in the horse's pedigree, as per color, size, carriage, conformation trait, characteristic...etc.
like a red headed baby popping up with parents who don't have red hair, but greatgrandma did have red curls on her head! so its not always can be blamed on the milkman who had red hair.

Actually...Listo's black genes were right there, otherwise he couldn't be black.
Listo's sire and grandsire were both black, which means no aguoti. Agouti is what makes black horses bay. Listo's dam (the bay) obviously was not heterozygous for agouti, so she passed her non-agouti gene, and Listo was born black.
Listo's black foal with the bay mare is the same thing as for himself...the dam passed her non-agouti gene to the foal and the foal was black. If the agouti gene had been passed, the foals would have been bay.
A great color for 'hiding' is chestnut. Because black is dominant over red, it can hide red very well...then you breed two horses who are heterozygous for color (Ee) and each horse passes the red gene (e) and BAM! you've got a red foal out of blacks or bays and it makes you wonder who-jumped-the-fence?...but it is just horse genetics.

Right now I'm with "Merlin". First name didn't fit him.

Coreen, I have seen non-fading black foals before born...just not here, and they are jet black as babies. Emperador has produced black offspring before.
;-)
He's beautiful, Lynn, Cogratulations! By the size of him, looks like he'll be jumpin' those fences pretty soon.
I am confused, though. I thought black babies were born a smoky color? If black babies look this black, maybe my little Retador is actually a dark grulla? It will be fun to wait and see.
LynnG
04-28-2006, 01:45 PM
Lori, most black babies I've seen are born the silvery black color before shedding, but non-fading blacks are born pretty black. Mine's body is pretty black but he is more silvery black on his legs. I will be able to see any primitive markings he may have with the silvery black before he sheds that baby hair and never to be seen again. I can see some tortoise shell mottling on mine's pastern joint area on his back legs.

Dang, he's cute!!! I am so jealous!
His legs even look better, I think he will be ok, don't you? Probably just because of the tight spot he was in for so long. I know my windswept one came out of it just fine.

He is a cutie! Those long legs are something. True blacks are sooo gorgeous! thanks for sharing!
We can't figure out where Brilliant and Adriel got their long legs either. Neither mom or dad are particularly leggy and Brilliant is already taller than mom and dad at two????

I'm keeping track of the boy's changes the first week. These pics were at 3 days old..........what a difference 2 days makes! Emperador has been putitng on long legs on his foals...this one got an extra dose of leg power though.

Here he is ...my blackish colt all of 3 days old
And I believe I have his final name...it popped into my head late today while out doing horse chores...that is the way it usually happens! And its usually after I have gotten to see his personality more so. ;-)

And what about this first time...I'm hungry and I can't reach the grass. HELP!!!
Better then I've Fallen and can't get up! well that could happen if he lost his balance squatting like what he is doing.
I'm having fun with him this week taking pics. These last group was at a break from a long rainy day.

Donelle, you can come visit when you're up this way. Just let me know when you're on your way.
Mistico is a (little) firecracker too! He's been having fun today running at full speed around the pasture with the one month old colt Magico looking on (first time both have been in same field area.) It won't be long before they are racing and playing with each other. Magico (the red dun colt) likes to get into trouble. He is a rascal.
Foals are alot of fun to watch and to hold them and get your hands on to rub them all over. They like it after the initial tenseness.
