I braided Listo's mane on Saturday. Put lots of CM conditioner in it.

I wasn't sure which side to put them on, but the mane at the top of his neck tends to fall this way - then half way down, it switches to the left side  I can usually get it looking good for a couple hours, but then it starts doing it's own thing.
I think the other guys are making fun of his 'do. So, how long does he have to be a "Girlie Man"?

Erin, he looks adorable. Are you trying to train his mane too?
Appy said to put big, heavy braids in for training so I kept them as big as I could. I see your boy's braids are on the left. Does his mane fall that way naturally?
Listo's mane is confused

no it did not need training, it is just so thick, and hard to keep nice.
Yes it does fall to that side , all by its self.
I thought that was strange too, first horse I ever had with it on that side.
does that mean some thing??? :?:

I usually train all mine to fall to the 'off' side to keep them out of the way when I am saddling/bridling etc. I had one though whose mane was so thick that when I rode him - it split down the middle and it looked like he had a full mane on _both_ sides!

You can also make one long braidesdown the neck. I like it better that way as if you just have the single braides then a naughty horse can chew one off.

I found if you do that you have to make them loose if not when they put their head down to eat grass it will actually pull some of the hair out...defeating your purpose of saving the mane..

At the friesian farm I go to, some of the horses get one long braid UP the neck, done with the head down. The braid ends with the long excess behind the ears, then the forelock is braided to fall on that same side of the face. Its pretty.

Can't wait to see this braiding system. It sure sounds like a neat way to accomplish the "save the mane" deal. Wish I had of known about this when I had manes to braid.
Those big black guys have awesome long hair........always wondered how.
Hurry Appy........I wanna see this........and how in world will you keep your guy's head down long enough to finish the braid? Never mine, you'll figure it out, I'm sure.
You go girl...............
Oh...........Picture(s).......don't forget those.........
Judy
ps........I sure enjoy seeing your guy, he's so pretty

Most of mine get groomed while they eat. No halters or lead ropes required!!
Another thing - most of the time, Pasos have straight manes and tails, while Friesians have wavy manes and tails (either natural or from braiding right before showing). Is it acceptable for a Paso to have waves for show, or is the straight mane and tale required because it's more natural?

Wavy can be natural too. Q's tail has curliques in it. I don't think any amount of brushing or hair gel will straighten it...her tail hair is very wiry.

Marinero's mane and tail are wavy, for shows I always braid the mane and tail and they have never said anything about it
