Good luck Erin! He will be fine, but I know how you feel. I went through it in March. I will be thinking of you.

Trust me, this is a GOOD decision.
Now you will be able to enjoy your horse in any setting with no special care needed. He'll have a more enjoyable life since he'll be able to be a horse and not be separated from the herd.
I hope things go smoothly for you both.

Don't be worried too much. I have never regretted gelding any colt. I might have thought about it after the fact, but never regret. Geldings get to lead a much more social life and get to be a horse in the herd.

What they all said, great decision...he'll lead a 'normal' horse life, not a life in solitary confinement.
Give him hugs and kisses, he'll be fine.

Erin - I will tell you the same thing I tell everyone with a young uncut colt - "He's worth more as a gelding than he EVER will be as a stud." Cut em young cut em often! Waaaay too many PF studs out there and only a handfull are worth breeding to.

thanks guys,
you are the best.
I need ya all today, thats for sure.
what a great family of barn friends. ;-)
everyone is groomed, and ready, just waiting now for the vet to show up.
It was a good decision! I have gelded them as young as 5-6 months and they made excellent geldings. Pistolero de Alexandra was cut before he was a year old and has not only been a National Champion, but High Point Bella Forma gelding 3 years in a row and a Top Ten Gelding for two years in a row and he is just now 4. Do I regret gelding him with his great bloodlines and obvious beauty and conformation? Not for a minute, because it allowed him to be the best he can be!

We just gelded our first colt (10 months old) by Eminente here.. it went _extremely_ well. Surgery was very quick and zero swelling. We believe he's going to be exceptional - and very elegant - but we don't need 3 stallions here and I'd breed to the 'old man' or Bronce anyway for the closest way-back bloodlines.
"Hey! Who you callin' 'O-L-D'????? Grrrrrrrrrrr!"

I also believe that you are doing the right thing. As pretty as your boy is, there are SOOOO many great stallions, proven stallions to breed to already. And way too many sorry ones. I think 90% of the existing stallions should be gelded. Think of all the drop dead geldings there would be! :D
Just keep your boy moving to keep the swelling down and he will be fine. Makes em grow taller, too! ;-)

I agree with Beth about there being too many stallions in our breed. We are not alone, though. Go to Ag Direct classified, punch in Rocky Mountain horse to search and see how many stallions there are. They can't all be that good.

o sure Abby,
I think you now need to bring him a carrot, when you get out of work.
Terri just left ( she is coming back ) but she rode a horse that has not been used for about 6 mths, and had a blast. ( half paso half paint mare ) nice horse.
then you could meet Pillo , o and Manito, you have not met him yet .
so come on over.
I am just sitting here waiting, they said after 1:30.
 aug I hate waiting.
Sandy I will tell Pillo that Uncle Emi, said HI. and that he wishs him luck.

I'll come over....I should trim some horses at my barn, but they can wait.
Was the 1/2Paint 1/2 Paso the one you mentioned before that used to be at Terri's or something...? She's at your place now?
I rode Terri's friend's mare Tuesday (Sue Mooney....or somebody..?) on a trail ride with Juan. She's a nice little girl....waaay to skinny though - she came IN like that, too! Any way, she'll probably make a nice little trail pony.
ErinC
04-27-2006, 05:16 PM
ya Sue went over this a.m. and rode her on the trails with Juan, she is doing nice.
not sure why she is so "little" she eats a ton, was vetted and teeth done, just to make sure she was OK. I know at once stage in her life she was in a Armish farm and might have lost some valuable growth, she left there VERY VERY thin, they breeder then took her back form the other owner , and started to work on getting her "fixed" but then Sue came along and bought her.
She is my Pillos 1/2 sister,,, same dad. and Pillo is bigger then her at this point in time.
Sue said she is going to feed her a TON more, and fence off grass to try and bulk her up ( yes she wil do it slowly )
At any rate , ALL 3 of mine need their feet done too, spring is here,,, they sure seem to grow faster.
Yes same horse I was telling you about, she is sweet, she gaited a few steps today for Terri, and trotted, she does not know what gait she wants to do, but NO posting is needed even in the fast trot.
I am gonna need your help to get all 3 fixed and on the right page, so when you come over we can figure out a time that will work for you.
I will PM you the way to get her, its wicked easy....

You have made a great choice in my opinion, and everything will go well. You have to remember... A good stallion makes a GREAT gelding. :)

04-27-2006, 07:27 PM
UGH! stupid vet, his computer crashed, never showed, gelding is off for today. Now we have to go through all this anxiety all over again!!!!
The paint mare is wonderful. Used her for everything here she is with my 6yr old learning to ride.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/micomyhorse/dandmikka.jpg
As for Sue's horse, she is fed all the time, plenty hay, alfalfa cubes, grain 10% fat, but she is picky, leaves food, comes back to eat later, but by then the fat pony eats it. OH and she is alpha, tells the pony to get away from the hay, he doesn, then she lets him have it.

Eat them? You guys have it all wrong; you're supposed to throw them on the barn roof for good luck. I tried it with Mojo's nuggets, but the pitch of the roof was too steep and they kept rolling off. After about the third throw, I gave up and tossed them in the woods.

I think the vet would have liked me to, he was very pleased with how good he was and well built for a paso,
the Vet is a QH lover and likes them big and built.
he was surprised a 2 yr old paso was as built as he is. and mellow to boot.

Baby is doing great what a trooper, he has been out to pasture, running, being normal he had some little sweeling, and a little drainage, he does not seem sore, I touched all over it, and praised him , nothing worse then a horse that hates to be touched there after this is done.
my other horse Incendio the one that gets the swollen sheath area, well because he did not move all day from being sore, he was all stocked up , so I had to take him and hose him, and walk him, then I lunged him a little to get his blood flowing.
I am telling ya , this stuff is a pain in the but.

I talked to the tech at the vet's office this afternoon, she couldn't believe Pillo was a Paso cause she didn't know Pasos came in paint colors. I educated her.
Oh, I think Incendio is having sympathy pains. Pillo looks great.
