News Release

Slow down or it will cost you!
Speed Limit lowered to 55 mph starting Monday on part of I-85 in Gwinnett

April 27, 2006

GAINESVILLE – Georgia DOT District Engineer, Russell McMurry announces the speed limit on Interstate 85 from State Route 317 (Exit 111) to Steve Reynolds Boulevard (Exit 103) will be lowered from 65 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour starting Monday, May 1, 2006. The speed limit change will be in effect throughout the current construction project to reconstruct the I-85 and State Route 316 interchange and extend the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane system in Gwinnett County.
“In our active work zones the speed limit is lowered by 10 miles per hour but this change lowers the speed limit on Interstate 85 and State Route 316 twenty four hours a day, seven days a week throughout the life of the project,” explained McMurry. “It is a safety decision. For the safety of people driving through the area and for our employees in the area, it is absolutely imperative that drivers slow down in this construction zone. There will be dozens of pieces of equipment and people working in or near I-85 at all times of the day. We must maintain a slower, consistent pace of traffic. Don’t forget, the speed limit was lowered in March to 45 miles per hour on State Route 316 *from **I-85 to Sugarloaf Parkway.”
Changeable message signs, new speed limit signs with flags attached and speed reduction warning signs will be in place to warn motorists of the change. “Remember by Georgia law, that fines are doubled in a work zone and that is for each offense up to $2,000 per offense. It will benefit your pocket and your safety for you to slow down and pay extra attention through this work zone and all other work zones in Georgia,” said McMurry. (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-188)
The overall projected completion date on this project is December 31, 2008 and its construction cost is over $147million.

Well shoot if we are able to drive 55 on that area of 85 it will be an increase in speed. Unless I am comming through that area on a week night between midnight and 4am I don't think I will worry about a speeding ticket.
