Long story with pics so grab some coffee and pastry...
We have had many who were rescues. Lots of stories to tell but the most dramatic was one that Newf Rescue would not even look at since he only weighed 45 pounds. I am an independent rescuer so have no rules or regs. As long as they have good temperament, they come home with us until they are well enough for adoption.
So this poor guy sat in the shelter for the 3 day hold required, then at 45 pounds (now he should weigh at least a whopping 140-150 pounds for his size) they neutered and vaccinated him.
The next morning I picked him up and transported him home. At that time we lived in Vegas so it was not too far.
Into the isolation room her went for 14 days. We have had many die from Parvo and Distemper so an isolation there was a must.
The poor guy could not even walk he was so skinny. His sack area blew up from an infection so off to the vets we went. They gave him antibiotics and soon he healed.
He came from a local Puppymiller I had gotten shut down soon after this. He had been starved adn beaten so badly he was terrified of men. To see a dog so skinny who can't walk try to drag itself away from a male (my poor husband) was just heartbreaking.
The dog we took with him had to go to a no male household and was adopted a week after being in the Iso room. She, too had been beaten by her human who bred her every single heat she had from the time she had one to 2 1/2 yrs old back to back to make money.
Soon he gained enough weight we tried to get him to walk. He would not eat any food except Satin Balls that were cooked (a recipe usually given raw to dogs to help gain weight) and some special made for dogs Sausage roll. About 12 dollars a day to feed him alone. Oi.. it was an expensive ordeal but we only cared about him and his recovery.
People on the Newf boards I was on watched his story unfold. One lived in Maryland and a year after we carried him fromthe shelter, he was well enough to be adopted by her and go back to MD with her.
Soon he was barking at her husband like he did mine. After many vet visist they found he has cataracts that may be why he barks so much at things is not exactly too corrdinated. And he may have Wobblers which affects his hind end from time to time.
Through all this he has struggled and last week he did his first human retrieval from the water. Still skinny with back end problems and all.
I cried when I saw his pics posted. He saved the one person he barked so much at, my friends husband.
He stayed with us a year and has part of my heart with him. He never left my side while I was home. He did the happy dance for me when I came home. I know his new mom loves him as much as I do and I am so glad.
Then:
Covered in thick mats and since he was just neutered could not be given a bath. He had been laying in urine for who knows how many weeks, had sores on his back legs becuase of it and had feces all matted in his fur. I slept and laid near him almost 24/7 those 14 days. Then he was groomed and slept next to me.

While he may have a good year or two, it was more then he would have had. What we do is all out of pocket while this year trying to get our 501 c 3. We love them and will eat pb&j's to make sure they get what they need to recover.
So many rescues so many stories..
