Long story with pics so grab some coffee and pastry...

We have had many who were rescues. Lots of stories to tell but the most dramatic was one that Newf Rescue would not even look at since he only weighed 45 pounds. I am an independent rescuer so have no rules or regs. As long as they have good temperament, they come home with us until they are well enough for adoption.

So this poor guy sat in the shelter for the 3 day hold required, then at 45 pounds (now he should weigh at least a whopping 140-150 pounds for his size) they neutered and vaccinated him.

The next morning I picked him up and transported him home. At that time we lived in Vegas so it was not too far.

Into the isolation room her went for 14 days. We have had many die from Parvo and Distemper so an isolation there was a must.

The poor guy could not even walk he was so skinny. His sack area blew up from an infection so off to the vets we went. They gave him antibiotics and soon he healed.

He came from a local Puppymiller I had gotten shut down soon after this. He had been starved adn beaten so badly he was terrified of men. To see a dog so skinny who can't walk try to drag itself away from a male (my poor husband) was just heartbreaking.

The dog we took with him had to go to a no male household and was adopted a week after being in the Iso room. She, too had been beaten by her human who bred her every single heat she had from the time she had one to 2 1/2 yrs old back to back to make money.

Soon he gained enough weight we tried to get him to walk. He would not eat any food except Satin Balls that were cooked (a recipe usually given raw to dogs to help gain weight) and some special made for dogs Sausage roll. About 12 dollars a day to feed him alone. Oi.. it was an expensive ordeal but we only cared about him and his recovery.

People on the Newf boards I was on watched his story unfold. One lived in Maryland and a year after we carried him fromthe shelter, he was well enough to be adopted by her and go back to MD with her.

Soon he was barking at her husband like he did mine. After many vet visist they found he has cataracts that may be why he barks so much at things is not exactly too corrdinated. And he may have Wobblers which affects his hind end from time to time.

Through all this he has struggled and last week he did his first human retrieval from the water. Still skinny with back end problems and all.

I cried when I saw his pics posted. He saved the one person he barked so much at, my friends husband.

He stayed with us a year and has part of my heart with him. He never left my side while I was home. He did the happy dance for me when I came home. I know his new mom loves him as much as I do and I am so glad.

Then:

Covered in thick mats and since he was just neutered could not be given a bath. He had been laying in urine for who knows how many weeks, had sores on his back legs becuase of it and had feces all matted in his fur. I slept and laid near him almost 24/7 those 14 days. Then he was groomed and slept next to me.

Now:

While he may have a good year or two, it was more then he would have had. What we do is all out of pocket while this year trying to get our 501 c 3. We love them and will eat pb&j's to make sure they get what they need to recover.

So many rescues so many stories..

Here is a link to just our rescues:

I can't imagine a Newfie only weighing 45 pounds. you and your husband have a heart of gold for what you have done for this guy. i hate puppy mills. wish they could get a couple shut down in our area.

OH you do such good things for those dogs!!!! It is heartbreaking what people do to animals. And it has been proven that those same people will also abuse other people, they are just cruel and heartless.
I love Newfees. A friend from college had one, his name was Liam and he was a WONDERFUL dog.
You have a great heart for animals, you will make a great Paso owner! They are sensitive horses that bond with a great owner.

Thank you for what you are doing! What beautiful dogs too. I have a real soft spot for Newfies, as they have a supposed common history with my beloved Labradors. Bless you!

You really should be proud of what you do. I like to think there is a reward in heaven for those who cared so deeply for the defenseless here.

Awesome story. I was touched.
I agree w/Terri...you are gonna make a great Paso owner. They seem to require you to build a bond with them....but once you do, forget it. They own you.

What a sad, sad, and happy story. You are to be commended for such great saves. Newfys are awesome dogs, hearts of gold like Laboradors (what I have).

Here is a Newfy story you'll like.

My in-laws live in the Poconos in a well wooded neighborhood. One of their neighbors owned a Newfy. Another neighbor, Pat, thought he was on her back porch in the dark and went out to chase him home...wasn't the Newfy...was a big black bear! No 'happy dog tail' there!

Pat was fine, but now she looks for Roger's tail before venturing out. LOL

What a great recovery. You must be so proud. Your story brought tears to my eyes. I to have a rescue from the shelter. I don't know what I would do with out my Buddy. Congradulations. You are a blessing for these poor animals.

OMG I love Newfies. I've only met one, found him on an off ramp of a highway, he'd escaped his yard, his owner came and got him... had to do it. I really nearly brought him home cuz he was matted and smelly, but he had current tags on. He was soooooo sweet. One day I'll have one.

This is a great story, that is one lucky dog. Its hard to believe he was even living at 45 pounds, that is way too skinny. Keep up the good work!

45 lbs. And look at that face!
That makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it.
What is the matter with those people?
Are they psycho or what?

Jenn, you are a treasure.
Please do keep an eye on that bad-a$$'s comings and goings.
He will try it again.

By the way, Jeanie ... Newfies are from Newfoundland and Labradors are from Labrador. Labrador is the northern (mainland) half of the province of Newfoundland, so though I'd not heard of the two breeds having common ancestry, it wouldn't surprise me.

They're both pretty awesome retrievers ... ducks for the Labs ... people for the Newfies! I don't know if you're aware of it, but the Newfies were bred to help the fishermen of Newfoundland. (That's about the only industry they have there.) Their job was (and still is) to jump in the ocean and rescue fishermen overboard. They even use them in helicopter ocean rescues too! Those big hearted dogs JUMP OUT OF HELICOPTERS to reach the people in the water and drag them to safety!
