View Full Version : Neighbor's horse part two

Ok, so my neighbor decided not to keep his new horse. Even after lowering the grain the horse is a little too hot for him. So he is taking him back to the place he got him.

Today he went over there to try two TWHs she had. He brought me along to see them with him. He knows that I'll be shopping for a large gaited horse in the near future. I rode the 9 year old twh and he rode the 15 year old.

I know that some horse salepeople are like carsalemen.....and this woman could sure talk up a horse. I found nothing appealing about either horse but tried not to say too much. My neighbor wasn't asking for my opinion really.

The horse he wants looked weird to me. One back hoof was much longer than the other three hooves. Now, I'm no expert...but if something looks weird to even me.....it's probably a problem. I pointed it out to him. He pointed it out to her. She said......oh, that's how they shoe TWHs. I laughed outloud and then clamped my hand over my mouth. I'm not 100% certain that they don't shoe twhs with one long back foot to help it gait.....but it sounds crazy to me.

I think, however, the story worked on my neighbor. He seemed satisfied by her answer and said he was still considering the horse.

He did ask me what I thought of the one I rode. I thought he was lazy, stubborn and in general unresponsive to cues outside of stop and go. Doesn't move off the leg....won't bend......started freaking out when I tried to put him on the rail. I'd say he was just trailridden and not ridden in a ring.......but even when I took him out on the road I found him in general unwilling.

My neighbor said he didn't think he was quite that bad.

When I came home I hopped on Scooter and rode around. It was like night and day. Scooter responds to the slightest of cues......eager to do whatever.....moves off the slightest pressure. I hopped on my Appy and played around bareback for a bit.

And when I put them away I gave them each an extra hug. Riding that TWH today made me realize how lucky I am to have the horses I do. I feel bad for the person who buys that barn sour horse......unless it's someone who can turn that around.

I saw my neighbor this evening and he was still talking about maybe getting that TWH. He said he really liked him. I told him that he should probably ride out alone with him before making that decision. We rode in a group but my neighbor rides alone all the time. He told me not to worry because the horse was an ex police horse.

I see no proof of that.......and to me the horse looks like something just saved from a kill pen.......skinny......scratches all over...dull. I wonder if that police horse story is true at all.

But unless he asks me.....I should keep that opinion to myself........right?

Aggghhhhhh~~~don't it just get to ya when you know and 'wish' someone else could see what you see?
Durned if ya do and durned it ya don't. Me? I'd have a tough time with this one..........and I'm sure you are also.

Good luck and I sure hope your neighbour 'opens his eyes'.

I would not say anything unless he asks, and be truthful if he does ask. If he gets upset at your answer, you can ask him if he wanted the truth or a lie?

If you know the neighbour well ... and if you LIKE the neighbour ... why wouldn't you tell him what you think? I'd be ticked with my friend if s/he didn't level with me and I wound up buying a dud because I didn't know any better!

Actually, I DID that ... even AFTER Rose told me this particular horse was a dud!

If he didn't want your opinion why did he want you to go with him???

What you could say to him is that you won't give you opinion of the horse unless he asks you so if he wants to know what it is he will need to ask.

I take it he can't ride Scooter to find out what a "real" horse should be like???

The good news is I think the man is coming to his senses. He came over today and told me that he might just keep the horse he has. I had to agree. I told him that of the three horses I thought the one he had was the best. I did mention that I thought the 15 year old looked a bit...worn...for a 15 year old. Without papers, I said, people can say the horse is whatever age....but that's one I'd check with the vet.

Now, I could not keep my mouth shut for the next part. Seems that he went back to see the horse dealer and she gave him some advice on controlling the horse better.

The horse spooks and has bolted once.

The woman gave him a more severe bit. I could not keep that opinion to myself. I said bits have nothing to do with spooking. Infact, if you've got a horse that wants to go....doesn't matter if you have barbed wired in his mouth....that horse is going to go. JMHO.

Course he thinks I'm crazy because I ride both bitless in halters most of the time. But both stop mostly off the seat and with the slightest pressure on the reins. I've worked on that.

I suggested lunging the horse....even before he rides. Eliminating his sweet feed altogether. Bringing out a natural horseman to do some desensitizing.

He said the dealer is sending out a woman to ride the horse a few times and maybe work the kinks out of it.

I told him that time in saddle and time with the horse would build that relationship of trust that he's looking for.

He told me that the woman said the bit would work. I asked him if he wanted to borrow my lunge line and whip. Not really sure why he comes over to talk to me.......sometimes it seems like we're not speaking the same language at all. I did see him lunging his horse in his paddock this evening....so maybe he did hear that.

I wish I knew more about training horses. I'd offer to help him. My experience is limited. I'm good with my horses but I'm not a hop on any horse and ride it out kind of gal.

You should have seen that horse move on the lunge line, though. He's a real beauty. Big, black, huge strides. I know quite a few dressage queens who would envy that horse.

So in the end I sort of told him. He never looks happy with what I say...but Hey, if he doesn't like to hear my opinions.....maybe he'll stop coming over? :confused

And I guess that solved the question of bugging Tony about the horse...lol...so that part is good.

Motorgypsy...

I did let him try Scooter. First he said Scooter was way too little. He wouldn't try him without his bit. Then when he did ride him he said Scooter was way too much horse for him.

Amazing! Does he drive a moped???

Well you can tell him two sixty five year old very decrepit geezers ride em hotter than Scooter I suspect. Our first was a spookhead who scared us to death when we first got her but we're adrenaline junkies and they taught us how to ride so we love'em hot.

If he has a computer tell him to Google KBR ranch and go to the training seciton of their website. It helped us tremendously when we were first startin g with our guys.

Find out if there are any training clinics near you, and suggest you go together? Just a generic one will do  But may give both of you something to get you on the same page ? And pick up ideas . JUST an idea ! Best way is to just audit - so you can ask questions :D
hehehehehehe - worked with my husband ;-)
