Details... oh boy! Well, I for one am new to Pasos.

Well, we only have one grade Paso Fino mare. We just recently discovered that's what she is! She had been barrel raced and had burnt out and prior to that had some very rough handling, and I've been riding her off and on the last couple of years and she has a lot of issues. But we found out that she had been sold as a Paso, so a couple of months ago I collected her up to see what she would do and sure enough she gaited for me and has been gaiting more and more with some work.

The rest of our bunch includes 2 QH, 1 Breeding Stock Paint, and an Arab. The last few years we've been barrel racing & showed hunter under saddle a few times. This year I'm starting my 3yr old for barrels & the Arab for hunter and finally have time to see what the Paso mare can do and get some good training time on her.

Has anyone used Pasos for reining with the NRHA or cutting? This mare has a fabulous handle on her and will lope with her head down and she's got the makings for a great spin, so that's what kind of led me to the reining.

I've also got the post on the training board for downward canter transisitions.... so we've got a lot to work on! ;-)

Glad you enjoyed.
The reining horses sure are impressive. I'm thinking of having one of mine trained to do that stuff. 8-)

Glad to have you!
It will be fun to watch how your Paso does with the cutting and reining stuff. I tend to ride english and am trying to teach my guys to jump. So far we have worked up to small crossbars, but I am not that good, I am sure they could jump with the pros with the right rider. It is great when people find out just how versitile the Pasos really are.

I don't know. I lived up there from 93-95 and that's when they were open. I don't know if they're still in business or not.

Thank you! Believe it or not, her mane is even longer now. It's about 4 inches below her chest now.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about her history other than the guy that my husband bought her from. He used her as a trail horse and was pretty rough with her. She's got a really good handle on her though and that made me wonder if she wasn't registered to begin with.

My husband bought her out of pitty as she was so skinny and wormy. She was his daughter's first barrel horse. She won some money in local 4D events. But unfortunately, being a teenager all she wanted to do was run and the mare got very, very sour to the point that she reared up on the gate and then jumped over the first barrel.

When I came along 4 years ago, I took her on as a project and worked with her off and on as I had time. Took me 45 minutes to get her in the gate to the warm-up ring at a show just to ride around. You'd be riding in a ring and she'd just drop a shoulder and make a mad dash to gate. It didn't matter if her head was all the way around or not, she'd take you there at mock 9! Beat all I ever seen. She charged in the round pen, wouldn't walk at all and barely would trot. The first time I got on her, it was 45 minutes of uncontrollable gallop and me trying to keep her in some kind of circle and away from the gate. Not to mention she tried to kick me when I first got on.

Last year, I had been working her in the ring and had spurs on. I use them to do things like move a hip over and that sort of thing. Just lightly as needed. Well, I rode her out to the pasture to cool her off and didn't think about taking the spurs off. She was walking along on a loose rein with her head down in la-la land. I was in la-la land because she was relaxed and all of a sudden something spooked her and she spun around. Well, of course the first reaction is grab with the legs... She bucked me clean out of the saddle and I broke my arm. First broken bone ever coming off a a horse. And she's only 14.2 at most... my big 15.3 appendix horse hasn't even done that!

Year before last, I showed her in a walk-trot class and we placed 4th out of 5 and 4th out of 6. Just getting her through the gate was a miracle -literally! So she's really come a very, very long way from where we started.

She's definately a special mare, at least in my eyes. :D
