Hmmmmmm-hmmmmm!! :D Have to see if Greg takes Pete - I had planned to take Bronce, but might be able to take Marci instead... how does she do in crowds? Has she ever been in the ring - this will most likely be outdoors..... Mel?
And I forgot to ask what type headgear you ride her in... ?

She has been shown every year (since she was a yearling), been to Fonda, Topsfield MA, Dillsburg, Syracuse......Equine Affaire last fall - does VERY well in crowds and at shows. Never had a problem with her when she has been crowded by other horses, will put her ears back in displeasure.......does NOT cross tie though!
I have a Myler I use on her when a bit is required, otherwise just a Jacquima with leather noseband and chin strap - if you hop on her you'll see how responsive she is......laid back too......AND has a canter/lope to DIE for!

Open air big arena - grass center with about a 15'-20' wide dirt track on the rail - white gazebo with judges and canned music in the center.
A good cheap way to get your horse out and have some fun. Plus, all of the racking horse people are pretty curious about the pasos.
I have shown here a few times and have always had fun. They have some new classes since the last time I was there.

This sounds interesting. I may have to show up and watch you guys. I only live about 15 minutes away!
I would bring my registered paso but he is not quite ready to be brought out to a show just yet!!!! Or maybe it is me not ready to get a stallion out in a ring... LOL
Hopefully I will be able to meet some of you and put a face with a name.

Bailey-
As long as the weather and the hubby (truck) hold out I will be going to the show. You are more than welcome to go with me. I will only be taking Phoebe. I want Phoebe to be a big girl and hang out at the show without "mama" Lexi to distract her.

Come on out and join us! You can see what it is like and maybe bring your pretty boy out at one of the later shows. It is a great place to "break them in" so to speak!
Look for a Gold F-250 - the front tag says "Cochran" - My trailer is a white 2 horse and should have a little bay paso tied to it if I am not in the ring. Baileyholc will be there with me.

I am anxious to see everyone! I know Bailey from Boyd's Open House in the Fall. She took some wonderful pictures of Mako for me. I will bring a camera and maybe I can return the favor for others!!

The show starts at 1:00 - I am hoping to arrive early to get Phoebe settled in and sign up for classes. I am still not sure what classes I will enter her in.
ASB - Got any suggestions?

By looking at the show sheet, you would probably do really well in the water glass, beginner racking, I would say 4 & under but there are sometimes lots of show horses there that are padded up, Mares, Ladies Country Pleasure, Country Pleasure Style Racking, Novice Open (Padded or F/shod) Favorite Gait (maybe some show horses there also), and the Championships if you feel froggy. I will try to call you tomorrow. If I can get someone to put Fatboy's shoes on, I will try to carry him to ride with you. :)

Well, I sure had fun yesterday - Bailey is great company and it was wonderful to meet Holly. I always like to get to know more GA people!
Bailey was a great help and got miss Phoebe all nice and pretty before we went in the ring. Thanks for all of the help Bailey!
Sorry - this is a little long. Summary - we placed in 3 of 8 classes :D - a second out of 6 horses, a 3rd out of 3 and a fourth out of 4 - so yes two of the ribbons didn't really count but hey, who cares. I didn't expect to get any. This show was for Phoebe's life experience. Phobe liked the yellow ribbons but backe away from the red and white ones go figure.
Phoebe was great for the show. :yay She had never been in that sort of environment before and held together well. We had to enter the waterglass class first. We didn't do so hot because I held the water in my left hand - which was shaking and then she did not understand the reverse on the rail so it took me a second to get her turned around. She was confused! Who could blame her - she has never been in a show ring before and we have never practiced that sort of thing.
She got better and better in each class. She was doing so well that I offered to let Bailey take a spin on her around the parking lot. They were doing great until a padded up bick lick horse came barreling up on them. Phoebe bunched up into a little ball and tried to scoot away from the big lick horse. Bailey handled it fine, no big deal - the guy on the big lick horse never acknowledged them. Turd head. He was the guy I liked to call "chicken rider" because he rode with his hands way up high and his elbows spread out like a chicken. His elbows were up and out even with his shoulders when he rode! He won first place in his class even though he was bouncing like crazy - I guess they look for flash over quality of gait.
After that episode, Phoebe would get a little nervous when the big old clopety-clop jingling racking horses went to pass her in the ring. She would tense up and want to stop. I could keep her going though at first she would skip a beat when they passed. Finally, we were in a class with big licks and she got over it after that. The only other time she tensed up was when two passed her on either side and crowded in close. She didn't break gait though - she just looked like "oh crap they are gonna get me" She just kept getting better and we actually placed second in the never won a blue class (out of 6). We won two other ribbons but that was because there were not a lot of entries in the class and we ribboned by default. The standard thing was that the judge would look at the horses in the lineup except for me and Phoebe. She would ignore us. I don't think she knew what to do with a paso. We need to get a bunch of them entered and make them look at us!
I had many many people come up to the ring as we rode by and tell me that I had the smoothest horse out there - what a nice horse - what a pretty horse - I can't believe that she is that young and green, she is doing so well - How much do you want for her- etc. There was one guy that was really really persistent and kept coming by the trailer to look at her and try to buy her. Other folks came by just to look and comment on what a sweet face she has and how well behaved she is. I think she did really really well. I could not have been more pleased with how she behaved.
soooo - with all of that good, here comes the bad. I should have known, something had to go wrong. And I really screwed up with what happened!
When it was time to go home Phoebe refused to load. There were a few people standing around watching. When they saw that she would not load they stepped in closer and more people appeared. She would get her front end on and back back off. A lady came with a handfull of rocks and offered to throw them at her rump. I told her no thanks and that Phoebe would not respond. I tried the forward cue that always has worked. Nothing. I tried to work her back and forth by the trailer opening. More people came by and it was like her brain shut down. She stopped doing anything. I got frustrated with Phoebe and the people and ened up taking the lead and handing my stick off to one of the spectators/"helpers". Well, he whacked her on the hocks and she launched into the trailer. I was so ashamed of myself for allowing that to happen.
I have been replaying the episode in my mind all day - and feeling like crap about it. I told Kevin what happened and he ripped me a new one for allowing such a thing  . I deserved it. He told me that as soon as people started to gather I should have tied Phoebe back up to the trailer and sat in my chair and waited for everyone to go away. Tell them that I appreciated them wanting to help but that I could handle it. I didn't, instead I broke the cardinal rule of working with horses - being in a hurry. I think I took a few steps backwards with Phoebe yesterday. I think Bailey hit the nail on the head with the problem - Phoebe has never loaded with an audience. I have not taken her anywhere with lots of people before and I think it wierded her out...plus on the way there a truck pulled out in front of me and I had to brake pretty hard. I heard and felt her hit the front of the trailer.
So today I went to catch her and she ran from me - full on gallop running away, spent 15 minutes circling the pasture at a dead gallop before I managed to herd her under the barn and into the stall. She ran away from me in the stall until I got her hemmed up in a corner. She then stood for me to put the halter on. After that, she did not want to leave the pasture, it took a little work but I got her out. After all of that I decided to keep today's session to fun things. I brushed her really well and used my uni-groom on her (her fav). Then I took her to the nice clover patch and let her graze. She would flinch when I went to touch her the first couple of times but then decided that I was OK. I went back and tied her to the trailer and fed her her grain and then we worked on "trotting out" a little and went back to the pasture. She was much more settled with me and came back up to me when I went back to the pasture later.
Tomorrow I will see how our usual groundwork goes.

Great pics! Bailey, glad you got to ride such a beautiful horse and good for you on handling that "spook".
Don't be too hard on yourself about the loading incident. She probably felt that you were nervous, so yes, you should have tired her, etc., but it's over and done with now and you can only move forward.

GRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrr..............to those follks that gathered to gwark at your situation with your wonderful young Paso that was SOOOoooo great all day.
That same thing has happened to probably all of us one time or another and NO one in the crowd has ANY horse sense or they have S##t for brains.
Don't be too hard on yourself and your gal has already forgiven you. You both will be better next time.
And congrats on your great day!

I did have a great time. And Yes, Pheobe was fine untill that Clod Hopper came prancing by. Poor thing. I could feel Pheobe getting nervuse and tried to get her further off to the side away from the clopping. But she was like a deer in head lights. She couldn't move. I felt as if it was my fault. We didn't move quick enough. Sorry Pheobe. Anyway, she did look good out their and after a while she handled them platroom shoe whereing gients with ease. And Mel, I wanted to tell them people to leave and I should have when I realized that was her problem. So some of that blame falls on me as well. I knew when that man took the stick that he was going to wake her. I should have took it from him. I'm sorry for letting you and Pheobe down.

I know what you mean about the trailer incident. I've had that happen a couple times at our local Saddle Club shows. It is almost as if some people enjoy your "failure" as they see it! If you did well in your class they never mention that later, all they talk about is "she couldn't even get that horse to load!!!" When someone comes over now and my husband is with me he just says we are fine and that we call my horse the 5 minute man (it takes 5 minutes and 3 step ups on the trailer before he is ready to go in.)
Keep us posted when the next show is getting close. I'm only a little over an hour from Cumming, maybe I can show up sometime with a horse or two.

OK, my 2 cents worth. We have a long (30 foot) lunge line, we run it through the loop in the manger and back to the balky one's halter. Then, standing behind the horse holding the other end, a few gentle tugs seem to get the job done.
We started this on Bronce, the blind horse, but it's worked on four other horses, some who were rookie loaders and some who seemed to have "forgotten" how at the Wrong Time (is there a right time to not load? Guess not!).
Just an idea.

I remember the long rope method. Sandy used that on Maggie the psycho mare. I had my doubts that the horse would ever get on a trailer again but Sandy managed to do it!
Now Phoebe - without a crowd she loads like a dream...never ever had a problem until the crowd came  . She is not a rookie loader. Just not used to having an audience.
I am going to borrow the family on Sunday afternoons and we are going to practice loading with an audience. ;-)

You do have to remember... what you are calling a "clod hopper" is someone's darling. That, and the fact that no one would own these horses if they were flat shod because they would pace you to death.

July, oye, worse. Gone more than home. August, maybe but Murfreesboro may conflict. September, Nationals, WAAAY bad. October, maybe but have a couple shows to judge and would have to see if I have any horses that are actually already under saddle in the barn.
So, conclusion, August and October look like the best bets. What are the dates for those months. I would look but I am really lazy.

Doesn't work. The weekend before we are clipping and we leave on Monday for Asheville. Also, I don't take my young horses to shows within 2 weeks of each other. I like to give them time to rest between shows. I am thinking that October will be the best bet.
I went to the site and all the click on things are just xs to me so I can't see the dates at all.
We live off hwy 369, too close not to try it! Here's the dates;
June 17, July 8, August 26, Sept 23, October TBA

Mel how about giving us a heads up when one rolls around. We'd love to come. Just depends on what else we have to do. You guys look great! Shame on that guy for whacking her! How would you know he would whack someone elses horse. I sure wouldn't!
By the way - we also use the long rope method for trailer loading and it has worked quite well for us. In fact we sometimes use two - one out of each trailer window - to keep the horse centered. We just tug and eventually they get tired of it and go in. We do always have grain or carrots inside. One thing though - don't let people go near the horse you are loading because if they don't want to go in they may be cranky and kick or bite. I'm sure she would have gone in for you. When we first got Chinook she was terrible about loading and many times people would offer help and we'd just say "Thanks but she's just a little slow!" You know Phoebe will forgive you even though it wasn't your fault but they do let you know when they aren't pleased - don't they!!!

Please note, that I also have 3 "clod hoppers" as it was put & I do love mine. ;) Especially this one:

And I do show him & pleasure ride with the same shoe job. Never had a problem with. :)
Edited to add: Right now I am already starting to look for another one just like him. Seeing as he is old (& I have had people saying he was crippled for years). So far, I haven't been able to find anything near close to him. ***SIGH*** I would die if something happened to this old man, we have been through everything together. He is my other "Jubilee", and I REALLY miss him. I just can't believe he is gone.
Oh, yeah... I was going to ask, if you have room, will come pick us up for that parade? Maybe Fatboy can spend the night in your stall & we can ride. I don't know if our truck will be fixed by then or not.

ASB, I was not tring to be afinding to any horse that was out their saterday. I am sorry If I affended you. The horse looked as if he had on platform shoes. They looked like they were at least 4 inches high. And was stomping so hard that I thought he was going to stomp on us if we didn't move. Your horse looks normal to me and very beautiful, that guy that past us looked unnatural. I wish I had thought about taking a picture of him.

LOL!!! No offense taken! Here is a good example of the "platform shoes":
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/stormy_warning/Horses/dumasken6.jpg
That is actually another one of the three that I have. This is one is Dumas (aka Dumass or I'm Dumas's Generator by his breeder papers, which is the stupidest name in the world). Actually as for the stomping, it is all in the horse. The horse in the first picture is a REAL ground pounder. He has to wear a theraputic or gel pad. The one in the second picture, who you would think would be bad, you can barely hear coming. Go figure?!?!?! LOL!!!

I have to add my "2 cents worth" on the shoes. I have ridden many, many TWH that have the platform shoes, and let me just say that the horses there on Saturday were NOT smooth. Bouncing elbows and literally people bouncing up and down in their saddle. Don't know if it was the horse or the rider causing the problem but it "weren't" pretty.
My great-grandaddy would have jumped out his grave and slapped me if I rode one of mine that way!!!
ASB the pictures you posted are definately graceful animals with riders who are sitting with calm hands (and buts :D ), but unfortunately there were more than a few on Saturday who had neither!
There were some absolutely beautiful horses that were obviously very smooth and they were a pleasure to watch.
I was very impressed with Mel and Pheobe. Pheobe started out shy but really got the hang of it as the day went along. I can't wait for more of the pasos to come to one of these shows!!! I will bring my two.
These judges need to get thing shaken up a bit. LOL. I really don't think they really even knew how to judge the paso up against these other horses. LOL
