Finally recieved the muzzles for my pasos yesterday. They were on back order and I could not let Cel and Josy out on pasture for long. I put the muzzel on Celadon and put him out with the 2 mares and Willy. They catched him all over. He could not understand why. He is the boss. FInally he stopped running and the other horses checked the muzzle over and left him alone. He did well but was ready to come in for something to eat by evening.

Josy was another story. She did not like it at all. She kept coming back into the barn looking at me to take it off. Finally, she decided I wasn't gong to take it off. I would look across the pasture to see if it was still on and it was. In the evening she too was ready to come in for some food. I went to take off the muzzel and she had the bottom of it tucked neatly into her mouth. She was out grazing all day like that. Wonder how she could chew any grass. Figure I must not of had it on tight enough. So will try again tomorrow. I am so glad they are so patent with my mistakes. With all the talk about pasos foundering I sure feel better now about letting them out on pasture. I highly recommend them.

Primero hates his muzzle........ but he wears it....... I'm not sure what routine Cristi has him currently on..... but sometimes we go one day on one day off, depending on how green the grass is. He has not foundered since he's used it - which he must as he is in a 60 acre field with very green grass. Summertime he spends the day in a dry paddock.

Can you post a picture?
The muzzel I had would not allow the horses to use the waterers. :-? The muzzle blocked them b/c it was too big.

I bought my muzzles from country supply. They are on sale right now. I think 25.00. I bought Josy the yearling size but I am going to have to get her a horse size. It is not working. Celadon I bought a horse size and we are not having any problems. Lilly, my spotted saddle horse has been using one for 3 years now. She had no problems drinking with it on. This is the second day for Cel and Josy.

We will be at the barn Saturday to drive the pony. I will get some pictures of them. I take it off at night and put the pasos in the barn with one flake of hay. LIlly never lost alot of weight with it but it has kept her from foundering and her neck is not so thick.

I'm thinking of getting one for my mare, Princessa. She is so fat. My farrier was out today and said her feet look great, though. She's staying in the corral and gets 2 flakes of hay per day. I let her out into the pasture for about an hour today because I felt so sorry for her all by herself in there :(

Maybe a grazing muzzle would be better - at least she could be out and boss the 4 boys around. They're not sure who the leader is anymore  I was thinking a screen type opening would be better than the straps? It seems like a lot of grass can get between those straps....??

American Livestock Supply has them on sale for $19.95. I purchased from them last year and am very impressed with the product - much nicer than his previous muzzle for which I had paid $40.

BTW - Kudos to Andrea for 'saving' her horses. I have a friend who muzzles all his every spring. Necessary evil.

we also got one from country supply. we tried it out on our older TWH gelding and turned him loose. Whew, was he one mad horse. he ran and ran couldnt figure out how to get any of that lush green grass. Only have him in a strand of electric got worried he would run through so caught him. he was out with his buddy and was getting everyone upset. plan on getting a more permanent fence put up this spring. I think the muzzle will be great and if i had a better fence I would just let him run he needs the exercize anyway! HA. think i will try smaller areas with the muzzle on and him attached to the lead rope til he gets the hang of it. love to see him be able to be out in the grass without worrying about founder. hes fat enough.

Debbie the bestfriend actually has a solid rubber bottom with a hole about the size of a 50 cent piece.the straps are on the sideSince horses rip the grass with their front teeth it does restrict them. They also can run the enamle off thier front teeth.Seen it..but no one ever seemed to get sore teeh..and that would probably be better than sore feet ..
