Looks like a pretty nice mare for that kind of price! I know the people that bred her...not the present owners.

One peruvian breeder said to be sure they at least "cap" the front foot with the rear when they walk normally. If they don't they may end up lame according to the article. I think it was U of Texas that had the article. I checked out paso finos and sure enough - they do at least cap the front with the rear.

:?: Do you mean have the back foot step onto the hoofprint of the front hoof when walking?

linda, why dont you get that mare and fatten her up a bit? does she ride ok? looks like she has potential.

MG, some horses "cap", some dont. some do at at different speeds/gaits. no correlation between length of stride and lameness.

Yes...Heidi...its an "over-step"...if a Peruvian doesn't "over-step"... it is undesireable. My Peruvian came from champion stock, and had the "over-step" to prove it!

The mare in the photo needs some groceries.... she is not "put together" very well. I'd have ANY Peruvian I was considering buying...completely vetted for any lameness. Just to be sure that there was no DSLD present at time of purchase. They can of course, develop it later on. The Peruvian I had, suffered from bad hocks, which lamed her up badly by age 11 or 12. Just FYI....

On another note...that Peruvian was just as smooth as a PF...and actually smoother than some PF's... Smart as a whip, big, lots of go-go-go, excellent manners........I'd just be real careful when purchasing Peruvians.

I went to the site and saw the other two pictures of her, and I have to agree with Terry, her confo. leaves a lot to be desired. She doesn't look as thin in the other pictures, though.

I considered it for a nanosecond. She isn't broke to ride, they just started saddling her. And they say she is a very shy, nervous type mare. Too bad. She comes from a breeder known for his very trail worthy Peruvians. If I had more stalls, I would get her JUST to fatten her up! She looks so unhappy.

Overstep does not mean squat when it comes to lameness/soundness issues on a Peruvian horse. Depends on the height of the leg lift, the "place" the termino starts (e.g. elbow, knee). Many factors to consider. As for the DSL thing - you really cannot tell if a horse will get it or not. If they don't have it when you buy them that is good. Personally, I always like to have a PP mare in my pasture - they are money makers - think gaited mule, Tennuvian, etc. It has been my experience that there is no horse smoother on earth than a PP - that is the GENERAL rule. Yes, there are some rough ones and some plain trot just like paso finos, but as a rule they are incredably smooth. She is a bargain. Buy her.

Funny you mention PP's. I got an email today of someone I had talked to many moons ago asking for a pic of what I thought was a Paso Fino in Texas. Turns out today she sent pictures, mentioned it was pregnant adn it was a PP not Paso Fino. LOL I had to pass as we just are not int he market. She was a pretty thing for $1500.

The Paso for $500 is still tugging at my brain.
