Beautiful horse...don't know how practical a mane like that is, but it's sure purdy! ;-)
I was taught this way to encourage growth in a horse's mane and tail. First shampoo the mane and tail and rub a good conditioning agent into the mane and tail.
Take an ordinary old bedsheet, and tear it into 1 to 1 1/2 inch wide strips about as long as you want the mane to be. Next carefully separate the mane into strips of hair to prepare to braid it. Hold a piece of the bedsheet at the top of each of the three sections of hair, and braid the fabric right into the braid, braiding the three sections as you normally would. Tie the end of the braid and go on until all the hair is braided. If your horse is abnormally hard on his mane, you can loop each braided section up to the hair root and secure with a rubber band. Leave the hair like this for three weeks to a month and when you take it out you should see at least an inch of new hair growth. If you want more, take out the braids, again shampoo the hair, and rebraid it using the same method.
Braiding the hair into itself without the fabric strips can encourage breakage. That is why you use the fabric.

I've heard from an Adalusian breeder here (she doesn't do it) that some people put electric wire on the insides of their stalls so they can't touch anything that would rub their manes :(

I can just see what that mane would look like after a day in the red Georgia clay!
MTG, cotton strips, tail bag, and a PADDED stall! Not to mention the genetics and nutrition........

That is so beautiful! The stallion is almost stepping on it!
I know it is alot to do with genetics...but I also know that if you DO NOT comb or brush out the hair it will grow longer and thicker. Combing while it is wet is even worse. I have been told that you should gently take out shavings or twigs...and only brush the hair after it have been washed, conditioned, and you have reached the show grounds.

Pituitary tumor.....
They can produce huge manes, tails, and forelocks....
Lord I hope that is not the case here.
I bought a young filly when I first bought pasos that had a mane, tail, and forelock that was huge - 3-4 time the length of the others her age in the pasture....
Got her home, did a vet check and she had a pituitary tumor.... the vets told me to breed her - she was really young... we did it and the hormones caused the tumor to rupture - boy was she a horid horse when that happened and the mane and tail started to fall out - she never grew a huge mane and tail after that - just a normal looking one.

Andalusians are known for long flowing manes/tails = )
That one's mane is longer then it's tail, now that's a feat!
My Andalusian rubbed his almost bald. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
