How do you feel about the brios between the two breeds? Paso finos vary a lot from horse to horse. Are the Peruvians less "hot"? And the gaits of the Peruvian..are they different or basically just the faster speed of the paso llano? I'm trying to get a feel on how the two breeds differ.

Great topic! I am dying to know the answers to these questions for myself someday too. I am going to have to ride them for myself of course. 8-) Still waiting on my Peruvian test ride.

The two I rode didn't really have any brio at all... both were rougher than Michico, (who's far from the smoothest paso I've ridden) but was a lot smoother than the Rocky Mountain horse I rode at the same time. Neither of them had a smooth canter and that was the basic reason I didn't look to ride any more peruvians. :D

Some of the smoothest horses, that I'd ever ridden, were Peruvianos. My husband wouldn't let me ride a good show Peruvian paso due to my back. It depends on the horse! I didn't canter any to judge that. Since I had access to them, I tried both to decide what breed was best for me. I chose the pasofino for the gentle back and abdominal exercise I received while riding.

I've ridden both, and both have they're own differences. The Peruvian stallion I showed all the time was amazing. He could shorten up and beat the pants off the Paso Fino's in classes. Then I could take Sueno out and open him up, with his termino I had to watch myself tho, and away we'd go with the cat like ease and stride to blow you away. He wasn't extremely fast but his offspring out of mom's Coral daughter and granddaughter are speed demons!
here's a pic of one he's registered with NASHA. I have this stud's full sister at home PFHA registered too! My largo mare for the future, watch out the dust shall be flying.

Having worked with my Peruvian mare now for several weeks, I do find differences between her and my Pasos. Granted, it could just be her, as I don't have a lot of Peruvian experence. Her canter is smoother than my Pasos. Her fast gait and canter actually feel a lot alike and she transitions so easily that I don't really notice the change. My PF has a rough choppy canter but I hear that some PF do canter decently. Both have brios but it feels differently. My PF feel like they often described..an engine under you. The Peruvian just feel like a eager to go horse. It is very hard to describe the difference. My PF will idle..ready to go but just standing still. The Peruvian is all go or total stop. I do have a very lazy PF mare. I call her my Pokey Paso. She has no engine. I have to kick and kick her to get her going. She is just 5 and fat. I have a friend who has Peruvians and I have hardly ever felt them get out of a walk into a slow gait. The amount of "go" may just be the individual horse but the "fire" or brio seems different.

As I read through some of these replies I noticed everyone commenting on the canter of the Peruvian--except, you're not supposed to canter them! =) The gaits of the Peruvian Paso are the walk, Paso Llano (four beat lateral movement in even cadence) and Sobreandando (which is the same four beat lateral gait but accelerated).

A lot of PFs have a lousy canter. My PP mare has a decent canter to ride and canters a lot in the pasture. Cantering isn't something I do much of when riding on either breed though. I love to gait and many PF and PP can gait as fast as a canter. I do notice on my PP mare that she has a nice range of gait. Her Paso llano can be as slow as a walk or open up and move. When she really speeds up, she seems to shift to s slightly rougher gait that I am guessing is the sorbreondando. I'm pretty new to PPs. I know PFs better.
