hummmm, how old?

sound strange.

all though if I dont sell one soon, it might be going for free,( or real cheap, anyway) I am not going to be able to afford hay for three this winter. and the farmer allready wants to know how much hay I am going to want.

plus I can not do one more winter with 3 horses, in the set up I have, it is starting to get to me.

UGH!!!!

$4.25 a bale! I can't find a bale of hay under $15.00!!!! I need to look into buying over a ton at a time, then I have seen it advertised for $10.00 a bale. Ahhh, they joys of living in CA!

I can get it cheaper then 4.25 a bale,
BUT.....
with our income, and the house, cars, kids, and all the stuff the kids do now that they are teenagers. and all the other STUFF that cost $$$$

I do not like living so tight!

10 - 15 PER bale!!! Holy Schamoly!!!!! How do you feed? Do you suppliment with beet pulp or something?

As for this Palo. It says he is a Paso, but not registered and he is 15.3 h. He might just be a lame quarter horse.

Lori, have you thought of getting a few friends together and buying a full semi-truck full from Utah or Idaho? They sell tons of it.

qltrlori
06-12-2006, 10:33 PM
I also feed Triple Crown Senior. And like I said, I could buy hay at appx $10. a bale if I bought a ton, but it would be out of town and I do NOT want to drive our beat up old farm truck to get it. The brakes don't work so good ;-)

I would love to hear from other in CA and find out how much hay goes for in other CA areas. I'd love to find some for closer to $4.25 a bale!

It's 10-$15 a bale out here too. One reason why we switched to the oat/alfalfa cubes. We can get 1200 lbs for $120.00. With all the wind out here almost half of their feed ended up in th air or next house over =(

Lori, don't feel too bad, the Alfalfa bales in California are 2 to 3 times bigger than the grass hay bales that we use out here so you are not paying that much more. Last I heard my in-laws in Rosamond were paying 9 something a bale but they get a truckload at a time. $15 sounds a bit high even if you aren't getting a ton. But that's California for you.

Thank you, Cindy!

I feel much better now!!

Oh I had hay-culture-shock when I moved to GA from the West Coast (California and Washington). I had always purchased my hay by the ton, here in GA everyone sells by-the-bale. You ask for a ton and they look at you funny.

On the West Coast, a ton of hay was between $80-125. Grass and oat hays on the lower $ end, alfalfas on the higher $ end. I am not sure what they have been selling for in the past 5 years.
I am accustomed to 20 bales in a ton of hay (West Coast). Here in Ga, I think it'd take about 65 bales to make a ton.

Bubba and Arty eat a bale a day.....Condessa and Star and 5 llamas eat a bale a day.....Diosa, Teki, Vence and 3 more llamas eat a bale a day...Roger gets no hay but beet pulp instead. These are about 55 lb bales..

Yep, the California Alfalfa bales run about 120-130. You won't see any pictures of them bein' picked up with one hand. Even if one could, the wire would hurt really bad.

When I lived on the ranch we had 40 acres of alfalfa. First crop was mostly grass, we got about 1200 bales (like those in Shelley's picture), and they weighed about 60 lbs each. On Second crop we'd only get about 900 bales, and they were mostly alfalfa with some grass. They weighed about 80 lbs each. By third crop we got pure alfalfa, but only aobut 600 bales, each weighing 120 lbs each.

Needless to say, on first crop I bucked bales, on second crop I stacked, on third crop I drove the tractor! LOL

Wish I had that hay field now.

Why didn't someone start a new thread? This makes a person search too much to find, which thread not only went off topic but is now the desired topic. Please, don't tell me, that I'm the only one having trouble finding the correct off-topic thread! :confused

I dont like paying $4.25 delivered and stacked in the barn (that is the exact amt I paid for the load pictured above...$3.50 bale and 75 cents bale delivery and stacked....

I like to pay more like $3- $3.50 delivered I found some for $2.75 delivered I get it today will let you know how it is...lots of hay here right now if anyone can travel

I have hay lined up for next weekend at $5.50 a bale...and that is FROM THE FIELD...they won't be over 65 lbs. It is a 75 mile round trip, with diesel close to $3.00 a gallon.... it will take most of the day to go down & get 250 bales....which will last me about 80 DAYS.

I use a minimum of three bales a day.... and that is just hay, no grains factored in...

Is it any wonder I want out of breeding horses in Colorado (?) !!!!

When I first got into horses...hay was $1.00 per bale, ah...the good old days!
But then...Omelene was $5.00 per HUNDRED pound burlap bag full!

Ah...the good old days....

I'd like to see a photo of the 15.3HH "Paso"...... the tallest one I ever owned was 15.2HH......... ;-)

I say...... TAKE your measure stick when you go see him!

Better yet...how about a PHOTO of him with a stick beside him!

A "warning".... some sellers are taken "a-back" when you exit your vehicle with a measure stick in hand...just tell them...its a "Back-scratcher" !!

cowboy ed
06-13-2006, 01:20 PM
well, to me, it just makes sense to be accurate about height. after all, like you said, you can measure and know for sure.
and i always think, well, if a person isnt accurate about how tall the horse is, then why am i supposed to believe any of the other stuff they tell me?

Terry Wallace
06-13-2006, 01:22 PM
AMEN Cowboy Ed...AMEN.....

We think so much alike! ;-)

If the seller could not even MEASURE the horse correctly.... the rest may be ....."out the window"... ;-)

My personal favorite....are the words......"Perfect Conformation"...

Wasn't that when gas was 24 cents a gallon? And you got a free tumbler with a fill-up and a SERVICE MAN came out and washed your windshield, checked your oil, and tire pressure??? Remember that?

On the flip side the minimum wage was $2.75/hour.

Oh well.....

If you hit the "prev" and "next" buttons below the photo, there are quite a few other pictures, including a few of this guy. None of them are really flattering, but then again, I don't have much right to criticize. I probably take 50 bad photos for every one decent photo I get.

I agree. He doesn't look like a Paso to me. Gaited? hmmmmm. Maybe it is that "perfect" confirmation.
