i bred two registered paso fino mares to my andalusian stallion last year. one mare foaled last week, a filly. the other one foaled about midnight last night, a colt.
this was sort of an experiment with gait genetics. i have had some folks tell me that the gait is transmitted to the offspring by the opposite sex parent, for example, in these two cases, the colt should gait because the mare is gaited, and the filly should not. others say it is just a roll of the dice.

well, i think it is a roll of the dice, because both foals are gaited! the mare that had the colt, also had a filly by the same andalusian stallion three years ago, and that filly doesnt gait. so, i just got lucky this time!

pictures in a few days!

Ed...Originally Andalusians were gaited! I worked with some of the finest imported into New Mexico in the 1960's. These included the stallion Caballeroso de Nevasco...who was gaited, along with several mares...what are the Andy bloodlines on your horses about 3 gens back?

Oh and...WHERE are your pics! We WANNA SEE !!

i have heard you mention gaited andalusians before, but was it a four beat gait? or just a fancy stepping trot?

Ed we want pictures!!! I'll bet these horse are gonna be gorgeous......
Can you post some pics of the previous babies you bred like this....this is very interesting to me. I am not surprised by the gait thing though since the Andalusion's Spanish blood is in Pasos....

Oh yeah, and what Barb said.....please??? ;-)

I have bred gaited to non gaited several times, sometimes it was a gaited mare, sometimes it was a gaited stud. All of the foals gaited undersaddle, some never gaited out in the field, but gaited very easily under saddle. The ones that did gait out in the field, did not gait as often as a purebred.

When I sold my Andalusian stallion (the grandson of Genio the black stallion) he went to someone local and I told him I may look him up in a few years to breed to him. (except he has that greying gene)

I wondered what a mix between the two would be like, so I would love to see pics of these as babies and adults.

Interesting about the gaiting being a crapshoot. Hmmmmmmm.

Terry, I asked you this question once and you forgot to answer. :-?

Anyone please:
I know that you can register an Andalusian/Quarter Horse cross.
But, can you register a an Andalusian/Paso Fino cross?

I hope this doesn't get me into trouble. Oh boy, here I go:
I would trade my Paso for an Andalusian anyday.

There, I said it. I'm out. The burden has been lifted. I don't feel trapped in this Paso Fino suit anymore. This feels good !!! ;-)

I totally love watching both Arabians and Andalusions - while I ride my paso fino!! I also enjoy riding in - for a few minutes - and watching a powerful sports car, but I wouldn't own one. And I might drool at some cute young guy - but that's all I'd do and I sure I wouldn't take him home! Some things are one night stands and some things are keepers. Paso finos are keepers!!

I agree with the MGs, although it was an Andalusian stallion that belonged to Dean Martin that I fell in love with, that led me to Paso Finos. I do love to LOOK at them, but "no thanks" I don't care to own/ride them. I rode them in Spain and am TOTALLY sold on my smooth Pasos...they have the power and beauty of the Andalusian, with better gears. LOL

Yes...in the half IALHA registry....I registered a half peruvian Paso / Andy. It says on their website ... www.ialha.org

Ed.... nothin' sinister about HZ gray...MOST Andalusians are HZ gray...I was just wondering if your foals would gray.... I LOVED my bay half Andy/half Peruvian...he was gorgeous and had "big" termino too... He was a Teodoro grandson..out of a bay mare...he won't be gray.

and YES..it was four-beat gait...but with Termino, much like a Peruvian except not as much Termino, not quite so exagerated as a Peruvian is what I mean to say.

I need to check my old American Andalusian Assoc handbook to check those bloodlines...have to get back to you on that...but I'm pretty sure the Banbury horses came later..like in the late 1970's?

Oh shoot...almost forgot..I would trade ALL my Paso Finos for the right Andalusian.... Andy's are my favorite breed...bar none.

Thanks for the registration info Terry.
I'm glad you outted yourself too.

My my, Carol is a live wire tonight.

I wish you guys were here in Miami. I can show you an Andalusian at the next farm, whose gait flows with absolute perfection with each stride. What grace, what form. To me, they we're born to be the perfect Dressage horse. This is a must see.

I'd love to own a Warlander (Andy/Friesian cross). There is an Andalusian farm close to us that is breeding them now. They are awesome!

The friesian is the reason I got Listo in the first place. I wanted a black horse with lots of mane and tail, and very elegant. Well, the Friesian was out of my price range (I never even knew about gait). Anyway, I found Listo and fell in love....

Yo Jenn.....go take a look at a horse a friend of mine owns...we hauled him from Alberta, Canada when her and I went on a horse tradin' trip.
He is the black horse, Conquistador....Susan calls him Dante

www.andalusiansdemythos.com

Yep..I'd trade a few Paso Finos for a "Conquistador"....

Pretty pretty pretty pretty! Kanio's pop was a True Bay, no greying factor but at least I knew he was going to grey before I bought him.

I do miss my boy here but he is but 45 min away and I can breed to him anytime.
