Wow, we use smaller ones I fill up and clean out 1-2 times a day.

Pretty scarey there. Guess when we move I won't be getting one of those.

Wow  Poor thing! Who would have ever thought that would happen!

I've had mine put their front two feet in and splash around, but never thought they would get all the way in.

Let us know how he is doing if you get an update.

I've also seen a photo of a horse who died in a tractor tire (slipped/fell/somehow got stuck in it) that was used to contain hay. I swear, horses are accidents waiting to happen. Give them an inch they'll rip a mile!

WOW! I have heard of foals getting stuck in tractor tires and dying (tires used as round hay bale feeders)......but I haven't seen a full grown horse do something like this!

I hope he is OK - I use the short metal tubs at home, @50 gal.......WOW!

WOW i've certainly never seen anything like that!I sure hope he is doing ok now!I use the hard plastic kind with the plug so I can let watter out to clean it but I don't think it's big enough that my mares could fit in it and I just pray that Rosa won't ever try!!Thanks for posting that here!Your friend,Moniece

Sure makes ya think doesnt it! I supposed the automatic waterers are the way to go, small cant fit a horse in one of those..

Just sad, I hope too he will be ok..

I've heard about that happening before with the big round ones - the kind I have. I just hope none of mine try that...but I'm sure I have one or two that might have thought about it. It DOES look like a bathtub after all!

This seems to fit my theory - NOTHING is 100% safe for horses. No matter how hard you try to have only the safest things for your horses, something can always happen. I swear sometimes I think they try to find something to hurt themselves on.

I hope the horse was not in there for an extended period of time and fully recovers from the ordeal.

Wow, Unbelievable. I would have never thought a horse could get into something like that. I hope he is alright.

I just got an awful thought...I hope someone didn't PUT that horse in there. :(

The friend of mine who had this happen, the horse did it all by itself. Got in and played and couldn't get out, slipped on the algae and down he went. I think they undid the plug and let the water out, but they still had to destroy the tank to rescue the horse.

I don't know that automatic waterers are a whole lot safer - yes, safer as far as this kind of accident goes, but remember that is how Tami lost her mares. The waterers got stuck and they had no water. It's also very hard to monitor how much water a horse is/is not drinking with one. At the jumper barn I used to work at, the colts thought it was loads of fun to hold the plungers down and flood their stalls.

I guess the safest thing are heavy duty buckets that you fill 1-2 times a day and can monitor water intake. Labor intensive, but at least you KNOW what is going on with each horse.

Here I am in full agreement with Mel. Horses always manage to find SOME way to injur themselves. I've seen them take hide off on smooth cement walls. If it weren't for Cut Heal and Wonder Dust, horseman's wonder drugs. LOL

Oh poor horse! I'm sure they had to cut the trough apart to get him out.

Someone was just telling me about a horse that got his foot stuck in a cattle guard. They had to use a torch to cut through the bars. He stood so nice and calm the entire time....

Mar would have freaked out..It's good to have calm horses in those situations

I like to know how much water my horses are drinking.....so I like the smaller buckets.

Not sure that horses are safe anywhere. I've heard a lot of bad things about electric fences......but we boarded at a place that had a big wooden fence and Scooter pulled all of his neck muscles being stupid. He put his head between two boards to nip at the horse next door and that horse started kicking. He pulled his head back but got the top of his head stuck on the board and panicked. I was so worried that he had done permanent damage but after a few days of bute and ice the swelling went down and he was fine.
