I keep wishing for better news from PR, but that is the law of nature. I have not confirmed the news but don't doubt it's true.
Zaphiro, the last son of Kofresi was injured while trying to live cover a mare. He was kicked in the leg (don't know which one) and it was broken. Because of his age and cost, the decision was made to put Zaphiro to rest.
I've read several different numbers as to his age, but he was at least 23 years old. His legend lives on through his sons and daughters.

OHHH I hate that. He was another we were considering breeding to. You wonder at that age why not do AI. He was such a treasure!

Go to pasopedigree.com under the Puerto Rico forums. There are several pics of him there.
Seems on-premise AI is not practiced often in the PPR group. Yet another campaign, I'm on. For some, the advanatages of learning how to collect and inseminate on-premise would be so much easiser.
Well, the only bright part of this is Zaphiro went down with "his boots on" so to speak. Apparently he had a very active libido and was very enthusiastic about his duties. If the mare had been hobbled, or AI, or .....but it's not fair to second guess the circumstances. Accidents happen way more frequently than most of us care to think about. I've had my fair share where later I keep thinking "what if I had...." to prevent a death or serious problem. We've all been in those shoes.
The other good news is that Zaphiro left excellent breeders. One that I can think of right now is Zaphiro de Kristal, but there's so many others.
