I have found a used "raincoat" for Amante online, but am not sure if it will fit him. I know how to measure for a blanket, but I can't do it alone and Hubby isn't around to help me.

Amante is 14.3 - 15 hands and 950-1,000 lbs. Anyone have a Paso roughly this size with a blanket? What size is it?

Get a ball of string. You can measure him with the string, then measure the string for size.

It still takes 2 people to do that, right?

I'd use the string and go from front to back, just use two hands and go as far as you can with the string to one point, then start measuring again with more string starting at that point till you reach the back, then measure the string! I'd say maybe a 74" sheet? You don't have a purple blanket for him?? [/b]

Yup, he's got a purple heavy duty winter blanket, but I've been looking for a lightweight "raincoat" for him for a long time. He gets the shivers during a cold rain in the spring & fall. Wuss!

BTW, The blanket he has now has no tags on it saying what size it is, so I can't go by that. I have also heard that Weathabeeta blankets run big, anyone else hear that?

Get a tape measurer and measure from the canter of his chest to his tail. Even this can be slightly off, since sizing varies by brand and style.

As I stated earlier, I know how to measure for a blanket, just can't seem to do it on my own, my arms are too short, Amante won't stand still, etc..

Nevermind, just got an email from seller of the used raincoat and it is long gone. I knew that a $100 blanket selling for $40 was too good to be true. Oh well, whatcha gonna do?

Tie Amante up and start measurung at the chest with string. I would bring it halfway along him, put my finger at that spot, them go back to the rear. Does that make sense??

Barb - Bianca is close to that size and a 72" fits her perfect - since I live in a way wormer climate than you, I use a Stateline Tack water resistant light blanket. They are only $39.99 plus shipping:

Wait a minute.....Is this the same Barbara that just posted the ? "how do we all do it?" Does Amante really need a rain sheet? He has a winter blanket, right? It is December in Up State NY. Is it raining? I don't have rain sheets for my guys. I do have winter blankets but only use them on days that it is below 10 and windy. So far I haven't used any and it was 15 yesterday. They can get into the barn if it rains, but I've noticed they seem to prefer to stand outside.God gave them a pretty good coat. I also have 1 cooler I bought at a yard sale and it has come in handy now and then.
Just an obervation ;-)

Right on, Terri! Let me 'splain it to ya. I do a lot of trail riding in far off and exotic places...horse camping here and there from June until October. In some of these places there are nice, dry stalls to put your horse, at others there aren't. A few times this year, when Amante didn't have a stall and it rained, he started shivering something fierce. I put his HEAVY winter blanket on him on a few of these occasions, he stopped shivering and started sweating. See, it's like putting on a parka in June because of the cold rain. You are no longer wet from the rain, but from sweat.

I have been online for quite a while looking for a cheap watherproof lightweight blanket to use on him for these type of situations, see? I finally saw one online and was going to reach into my "secret stash o'horse cash" to purchase it, but alas, now I can't.

Let me know when you find the right blanket Barbara, I do the same thing and have the same problem with Zar. Up at the CTR she shivered and had to blanketed when no one esle was, and when it rained I had to double blanket her with a rain sheet on top (that I borrowed). I still need one of my own.

If its winter blanket fit - could not just lay out that one on the ground and measure it?

Here is the picture of the blankie that hubby bought Amante/me for Christmas. I have used it on him these past few days since it has been close to 50 degrees out. It is a really well made blanket, fits him like a glove and repels rain really well. I love it! Here a picture from ebay of the one I bought. The seller is Equus Now. CarolU, take note:

I guess for we who haven't done that kind of trail or camping where a horse is tied up and isn't able to huddle next to his buddies for warmth, wouldn't think of the need. As my work partner Rita tells me, I don't know a ting about trail riding!!!!!

Horse camping is fun. We went over the week-end, Thank you Dr. King for the day off. The weather was great and the horses ready for a little exercise. Since it was close to 70 degrees Monday we didn't need any blankets. We also had stalls.
