Ch. Wintersweet Bet on the Blues (GrayBoy). GrayBoy is a Siberian Husky that I co-own with two other people.

Tomar's Jubilee By Request, CD, CGC, WC (Jubilee). Black Labrador. Jubilee is my baby -- the apple of my eye.

Tomar's As Pretty Does (Jolie). Black Labrador. Jolie is my smartest dog (the only female -- go figure!), and I have been so negligent in her training. She should definitely have some titles after her name. She rules the roost.

Sir Woodrow Barkley, CGC, WC (Woody). Golden Retriever. My oldest and my sweetest Golden Boy.

I guess I will add Shawnee, the yellow Lab I co-own with my mom. Here she is after raiding the greasebucket on our grill on Christmas Day. We had to give her hydrogen peroxide to make her relinquish the grease. She was not happy.

Opinions are like brains... everyone has one. I think everyone has a brain anyway. Sometimes I have seen people that make me want to question it. JMHO

But in reality, that is what these dogs are bred to do. They are bred straight for hunting & herding. In what we do, they are competion dogs. They are not allowed to catch the hogs. You don't run in our world. All you see are the pictures & form opinions without knowing what we do. Which in people like you, that don't ask, we just disregard most of the time. This has been explaining once before on here, I don't guess you paid attention to that though.

This is for you Bailey! ;-)

hit that on the head because i don't. have NEVER owned a purebred. have i asked a dog to do what your's do?
Never!
have i had my dogs defend me? You Bet! in a heartbeat and they look just like yours! but i have never ASKED them to go into this kind of a situation FOR me.

And you explained it to me before on here? Not all of us have the time we would like to spend on this board. i work 40 hours a week and 60-70 over the winter. i then help a couple in their late 60's for 2-4 days a week. Heck! you're right again! no, i don't have the time to spend on this board that i would like to.

I wouldn't want to be one of the hogs...

You don't have to make or ask the dogs to do this. They just do it, it is what they were bred for. This is what those dogs LOVE. Really, I have seen it.

Kinda like border collies can't help but herd (great for parties with unruly kids). ;-)

i don't run in your world, ASB?

****Have to say with a closed mind like yours... I am glad that you don't.

hit that on the head because i don't.

****Still glad.

have NEVER owned a purebred.

****These dogs are not totally purebreds. It takes a bunch of different breeds over the years to make them.

have i asked a dog to do what your's do?

****You don't have to ask... they will do this on their own to anything they think they can herd. This includes horses, cows, coons, & even bear.

Never!

****You don't have too. It is your dog, you can them do as you please.

have i had my dogs defend me? You Bet!

****And I hope they defend you in however you would like them too.

in a heartbeat and they look just like yours!

****Your dogs may look like mine but then again... they are YOUR dogs. Not mine.

but i have never ASKED them to go into this kind of a situation FOR me.

Still don't have to ask. They also do this for themselves.

Hmmm... I work 45-50 hours, sometimes up to 60 a week. Keep up with a 3 month old, six 3 month old puppies, 14 full grown dogs, & 4 horses. I don't spend all my time on here as you seem to think.

wouldn't want to be one of your dogs is all i can say . . . . .

****If you were... you would more than likely go to a pet home.

And as I said before... everyone has opinions.

These are two of mine...Kylie and Wiffle. We found them in a ditch when they were baby puppies. The look like an Aussie cross, especially Wiffle. And they have a very strong herding instinct. We just love them to pieces. And thank God that someone was stupid enough to throw them out, and we found them.

ASB, How big does those dogs of yours get? And will they get along with my lapepuppy of a dog Aussie.

They get about knee high tall & weigh in at anywhere from 40-60 lbs depending on the dogs build. Some are more houndish looking where some have a bulldogish look. As for getting along... they will get along with almost anything. We take some of ours to the barn with us so they can play with the barn owners Aussies. When the puppies are loose, they play with all the big dogs. Cujoe is hilarious to watch with the puppies. He thinks they are all his! Billy just kills me when he plays with them. They will go to play someone else & he just uses his foot as a hook. He just latches it around them & brings them to him.

This is my kind of thread. I will have to go take some pictures this weekend. I have a coydog. ( 1/2 coyete and 1/2 shepard.) Boy can he sing. It is beatiful. I keep him in a cage and let him out only when i am present. I would not recommend a mix breed like this for anyone that has children. Clyde will stalk anything that he thinks he is bigger then. I have to be really careful about my cats. He would like to eat them. He slinks around. Very sneaky. But we have a good understanding. He obeys me very good but will very seldom come to me to get petted. We found him and 4 other puppies in my woods. He was the only one that had a very bad personallity(coyete like) so I kept him.

Sunday. someone dropped off a 1/2 shepard and 1/2 husky from what the vet said. Now, i already have 6 dogs. Called our animals shelter and they said they would take it Friday. Yea, right. Leave it with me for 5 days and expect me to get rid of it. She is now number 7. Her name is Lucy. My other dogs are thinking, oh no, not another puppy to deal with. They completely ignore her right now. I have alot of work to do with her because she loves to chase cats. That is unexceptable in my barn. She is learning very fast. The cats are turning on her.

Tuesday I went to the gas station and in the middle of the road was a really pretty blood hound. Big with the droppy eyes. She was a baby machine had teats drooping. I ran to the road put a horse lead rope on her and put her in my truck. Glad she was gentle. Took her straight to the animal shelter. She had to belong to someone. So tomorrow Iwill call animal shelter to tell her I am keeping Lucy and will of course ask about the blood hound. Maybe if no one claimes her she will be number 8. I am so lucky i have a husband that puts up with me.

I will post some pictures later of Rocky, snickers, clyde, happy, sugar, spike and lucy.

Andrea,

Your post is part of why I love this board. I like that you kept the only puppy that had a bad personality.

I don't have 8 dogs...but I DO have three...which is one more than I wanted because some woman at a yardsale started crying that her dog had lymes disease pretty bad and was going to be put asleep because she was moving and the shelter wouldn't take him in that condition.

I like a hairfree house that doesn't smell like dog.....but this 85lb 1/2 lab 1/2 shepard is worth the hassle. My little dogs are balls of love....always cuddlling.....but they don't do much beyond that.

Luke walks me to the barn at night (even though he still is a little wobbly after several treatments). He stays with me when I clean the stalls and check on the horses. He escorts me back to the house. He takes that nightly job very seriously. My neighbor came over to say hello to me in the dark and Luke leaned against my leg and made a rumbling noise deep in his chest. I looked up and there was my neighbor about 10 feet away. I wonder if he was well trained or just has good instincts. I patted his head and spoke to my neighbor and Luke settled right now. He makes me feel safe when I walk around the back yard in the dark.

He'll always have health issues related to the lack of treatment he had for the lymes disease from his previous owner.....but he's only 7 and look at that sweet face....

I think dogs know when you've saved them.

ASB I liked the photos of your dogs. It shows that they are good working dogs that take their jobs to heart. I have seen plenty work dogs doing their jobs and when it comes down to it they wouldn't attack, they just nip at the heels. Are the pups black mouth cur by any chance? My neighbor has one and she is very sweet.

Truestep,

The worst dog I ever adopted....or worse case I'd say....was a little cokerspaniel that was in a crate outside of Petsmart. I just went that day to get a toy for my dog. A local shelter was adopting out dogs. I almost made it by her crate but made the mistake of stopping and looking at her. She was shaved almost to the skin and was covered with sores. All four of her feet were wrapped in tape. Her neck had tape around it.

I asked the woman what was wrong with her. Apparently she'd been tied outside on tar in Florida with a chain that she had long ago outgrown. The pads of her feet had all become burned and infected. The sore on her neck was from an imbedded chain. Her skin was infected from fleas, ticks, and they thought possibly nerves. She would be almost $300 to adopt because she came with various cremes and would need extensive vet visits. Plus there was probably no chance that she was housebroken.

You know I took her. I spent the next year rehabilitating her, socializing her, working on her skin conditions. She turned out beautiful when her hair grew back in. You'd have thought she was a little show dog.

I had to find a new home for her eventually because she did not do well in family situations. She needed a single person as an owner. She was very possessive.

I wish I had room to save some of the horses we see here. I can't go to auctions or shelters because all you have to do is look one of them in the eye.....and you're sunk. I know there are several people on this board who feel the same

I love to see before and after pictures. They really warm the heart.

SO true Minouri! Before and after shots are uplifting......

Even as a child, I was constantly taking home limping animals, or strays.....my parents are total animal lovers, but even they had had enough

I once hit a skunk (by accident, of course), and was so distraught over it, I went over to him, scooped him up in a dog blanket, and set him on the side of the road all wrapped up with his little head peeking out. I tried to hide him best I could, in case any coyotes were around.....He just layed there, blinking, looking up at me. I knew, right then, I was SO going to he!! when I die.
I got back in my car, reeking.....and cried all the way to New Bedford (45 minutes away). I felt AWFUL. Seriously, if it wasn't 10 o'clock at night, I would have brought him to a vet

The other night, I got out of my car in the middle of the street at 11pm to "shoo" away some baby racoons. They were just hangin' out in the middle of the street.....and 20 yards away, their brother had already been squashed. So, there I was, pushing baby racoons with my barn boots off the street...they actually seemed annoyed by me - not afraid at all. So I had to kick sand at them to send them further into the woods

I am a complete sucker.

Minouri

True,

I once got yelled at from the owner of a barn I boarded at. I was driving down the road to his house and a huge turtle was in the middle of the road. I picked it up by the sides and put it on the other side. The barn owner saw me from further up the road. When he got there he kept yelling that it was a huge snapping turtle and I could have lost some fingers and I could have killed someone by stopping in the road.

:question I donnu the difference between turtles......just figured he'd surely get hurt there and probably take a driver's life with him...he was huge.

they DO say that no good deed goes unpunished. I did get chewed out that day .....and didn't chew him out back....mostly because I LOVED his indoor.

This will be a long post since we have 7 dogs here now.

This is CB who is a bit over a year old now. He is 3/4 Newf & 1/4 Great Pyr. He was one of 7 puppies and adults I took from the second BYB I shut down who got 2 his dogs from the first guy prior to shutting him down. The last of any dogs he was going to breed. Again with his permission and working with A/C he is no longer in business.

This is his half sister Myla who is 3/4 Newf, 1/4 Pyr, same dad different mom, who is squishing Troy my husband and he is thrilled LOL. The BYB was going to breed her at 6 months so I had someone go in and buy her and I took his female (with his permission after months of dealing with him and the A/C)

This is their grandfather Blue the Newf from the first BYB I shut down who is no longer in business.:

And Donnegain from a "Breeder" who did not want to pay for entropian and got rid of him. He is a Brown Newf. (Yes they come in many colors)

Thanks Erin. He is what is called a Sable. His mom is sable and his dad is solid black. He is of Czech bloodlines. His mom's dad is a police dog and some of his littermates and other past "sibling's" are used for search and rescue. Too smart for his own good, but having fun with him.
Such GOOD looking dogs everyone has. WOW !!!

Here's my Shanna, 6 mo. old Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)...this dog is the love of my life...she's incredible! Almost human...but then so are all the other animals on my place... ;-)
Or maybe it's that I'm becoming almost animal...hehe...

I also have Sam, a 7 year old purebred Swedish Elkhound (Jamthund) and Bear, our 14 year old Rottweiler (yeah, 14...like the EverReady Bunny...he just keeps going and going). My scanner isn't working so I can't scan in pictures right now...will try to post them later.

Carol......WOW 14! That's about ancient(sp?) for a Rottie.
Hug that bugger for me. I lost mine Rott at 11. He was huge, one of those 'big headed' ones. German bred. Such a nice guy and very smart.

Am on my third Rott now. We rescued him from a shelter. His name is Dozer, the one he came with. It fits him well....he chases shadows and if you make one over where you want weeds removed, he accomdates by pulling out the weed (shadow) OR digging it up, the shakes it and man does the dirt fly. I'll try to catch him on film.

Huuummmmmmmm.....maybe I'm missing out on a chance to make some extra $$$ "Weeding Dog" for rent?

Judy and Chloe the Bengal who is busy shredding a piece of sisal rope she and her Orange buddies have ripped off one of their cat trees.

(side thought....will that sisal be a problem IF it gets injested?)

That is old for a Rott!!

I lost both of mine at 11 and 12. I miss them so much, would love another Rott.

Right now I have my two rescues, Phantom and Shadow.

I seem to inherit or find dogs. This is Ginger. She went from one elderly lady to another before I got her. When my friend was placed in a home I took her. We were told, that she has Austrailian Shepherd and Lab in her. She may be the best dog, that I've had.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v348/pasofantasy/Webav100010306001.jpg

This is MacGwyver. A vehicle must have buzzed him. He was found unconscious by tourists in front of my neighbor's house. They found me at home, so I tried to find the owners without success. Mac bonded with me, crying if I wasn't with him at first. With my back, I didn't think I needed a puppy underfoot, but he's brought me lots of laughs.

This is my newest lost soul to find me. I took out an ad and put up posters, but didn't think to have her scanned, so I need to do that. She was skin and bones when I found her. The girls next door found her first and one dropped her, hurting a paw. When the vet came for the horses, he checked, but I don't know, who will want to deal with that. She's a sweetie though and smart, too.

Here is Nena - our Border collie cross, Zuri our female cattledog and Santo (waving) our male cattle dog - he was still a pup in this photo. Zuri just had emergency surgery yesterday, she lost all ten pups and nearly died. We will hear more today as to how she is doing - she was very ill.

Ohhhhhh, I am so very sorry. I was looking forward to seeing them (even thinking of buying one). Ten puppies is a lot for such a small dog. I wonder why she didn't abort before they became a problem.

I so hope she is okay. :hug Hugs to you and her.

We don't know yet what really happened - It has been a terrible couple of days - I had to pull out a dead puppy myself. Zuri is the best dog of all time for me - she follows me everywhere and loves to do chores with me - The vet called us back as soon as he put her under and said simply that she may die because of her reaction. I think she has pulled through because she is a hardy cattle dog! The pups would have been so wonderful - but right now I am grateful that we still have our Zuri.

no I think the size is relative. She is long bodied but you can't see it from the 'now' picture. I'll try to find another one that shows it.

jan k
07-05-2006, 01:22 AM
Yes, they're both Basenjis. I've had Pie (the red/white) for 5 years and Dot (brindle/white) is 1-1/2 years.

Basenjis aren't for everyone. You have to have a sense of humor to enjoy them :D

Beautiful dogs. They look so regal. Sounds like we need to hear some Basenji stories.

jan k
07-05-2006, 02:04 AM
Well....Basenjis are a very ancient breed, going back to the days of the Pharoah's in Egypt. They disappeared in Northern Africa and were discovered again in the Belgian Congo (now known as Zaire). There were imported to England around 1930 and after loosing the first few attempts to distemper, they were finally able to establish the breed. A short time later the first dogs were brought to the US.

I was just giving you a little background so you can understand that they lived in the jungles of the Congo and lived with the natives, but were not pets as we know them. They worked in a partnership as hunters (drove game into nets), but pretty much were left to fend for themselves. It makes them pretty independent and more catlike than doglike. They have no conscience and no regrets when they misbehave. True they are very elegant, don't bark (but are not silent), clean themselves like cats and no doggy odor. They do shed, but their hair is about the length of an eyelash.

My first Basenji, Toby, taught me alot. I was told to crate him, by the breeder, any time I was not with him. Who was to know that he could destroy a whole couch in 30 minutes time, teepee the entire house and pull the drapes off the rod and be very pleased with himself.

Most of the time, Basenjis lay around like any other dog, but they are sighthounds and do like to run. They do what is called the Basenji 500 and run through the house, banking off the the furniture doing flips in the air and can spin on a dime. They are very athletic. You have to be the alpha, or they will be. They are aloof with strangers and normally are not social with other breeds of dogs and you usually cannot run the same sex Basenji's together.

On the other hand, they are clowns and are about the most entertaining dog you would want to meet. Although they are aloof with strangers, they become very attached to their people. I can't imagine not having at least one.

Sorry this was so long, but you asked <g>

when I went to pick up my last Bichon, they had Basenji's as well...... what a temptatation it was to choose one of them instead. But I wanted that little fluffy love bunny dog, that I had never had as a kid. Bichons don't count as dogs..... Zuri is smaller than any of the Landslide Farm cats.

Basenjis share a lot in common with the Pharoah Hound I alway wanted one but don't think the breed is right for me so I went with the Pharoah

Well, heck I started typing and got on pic up then it took me back to the index? Anyway I will post again and it if doubles I will edit one off.

This is Jule a few weeks ago, she got two master hunter legs this weekend:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a78/quickpup1/BobbyandSherylJuleandTracy.jpg

And another shot of her. The weekend after she got the master legs, she earned a 204 prize one in a navhda ut test (highest possible score). I know this stuff doesn't mean anything to 'horse' people, but it is a pretty big deal, especially for a woman owner/trainer/handler. She is now quailifed to run in the 2007 invitational.

OH, the solid dog in the first pic is a son of Jess (who is in my avatar now, thanks to Lori! Thanks!) he got his first junior hunter ribbon that weekend, he aso has a navhda natural ability score of 112 prize one (highest score) his owner waited a long time for him, and just loves him to pieces, he is totally spoiled rotten!

And congratulations, Tracey. Glad to know I am not the only woman on here who considers "Gun Dog" and "Field & Stream" required monthly reading! ;-) GSP's are such awesome dogs. My family has always had Labs but we have hunted with some GSP's. Very impressive!

LOL, Barb you crack me up at least once a day! The dog in my avatar, always has something in his mouth. Whenever we have had kittens he is usually running around with one of them in his mouth, or once in the while he will loose his mind and grab a chicken and run laps around the yard. The chickens always have the funniest look on their face! Before anyone jumps me, he never hurts them, just takes them for a spin.
Now, varmits on the other hand, do not fare so well.
