Not my horse - someone on a Yahoo group up in Ct bought her and is getting her delivered in a week or two - I pointed her in this direction but thought I'd get a jump start on finding out who this is.

Are they sure she's a Paso Fino? That's a pretty obvious trot in that picture.

She is pretty though...

ummmmm----they're not thinking  if there's gait there it could be suppressed by saddle position.

Ok - I talked ot her some more - this mare is also broken to drive.....

Thanks. She says she is gaited. Since I have a kimberwick with a copper roller I am going to try that. I love driving. She matches my driving pony. She sure is flashy.

I'm going to have to go back and check where I put Scooter's saddle. I've had people tell me not to put it too far BACK.....but those were all western riders and not gaited riders. What is the rule of thumb?

back OFF the shoulder, if it were any other horse you were going to place the saddle on, do that, THEN pull it back a little more on a paso!

I don't think that there is any breed where you put the saddle on their neck? I just saddle up Primero as if I were going to saddle a thoroughbred and it works just fine.

lots of english people are taught to pull it right UP TO or ON the wither.

I never did it like that Esurne, but lots do!
like in this pic' that is posted.

Pasos need the shoulder to be free ( all horses do really )

You are taught to put the saddle on a thoroughbred (this is the little exercise pads for the track, or close contact saddles for foxhunting), by setting it on the withers and pulling it down to the correct position. I have never, in England, or here in this part of Maryland, where everybody rides English, seen that kind of saddle position.

Are they selling her?

A woman in Ct has bought her - is getting her delivered around the 15th.

This mare is also broken to drive, I have a picture (too slow connection at home to post it).......

I agree Edurne, I have never seen it with any other breed, but do see it a lot, with Pasos, especially in the show ring. One MIGHT wonder that since most people slide the saddle back so as not to inhibit shoulder movement, if some people place it forward TO limit the movement. It would definately shorten the stride.

Hmmm...going to go play with where I put the saddle......imagine if THAT was what made his gait choppy? I learn something new everyday here.

Like I've gotten grief from western riders about putting the saddle too far back.....so I moved it forward. People have told me that you can damage their back by being too far back. Now I've got some serious reading and saddle placement issues to think about. Anyone got a good picture of a well placed saddle you can send me? if you don't want to debate it with the whole board you can send it to me at Minouri@aol.com.

Thanks

You know I might be at fault for putting a saddle too far forward... :(

Edurne

do you ride with Western saddles or English. I found it interesting when visiting Coreen and she showed me her new saddle that she mentioned that she sits far back in it. Of course, she is tiny and has lots of room to play. Because I am huge and just ride "english" the saddle doesn't give you a choice. I am just balanced in it.

that pulling the saddle further back.... sort of confuses me..... I tried that with the new endurance treeless saddle that I purchased, and Primero bunched up and was very unhappy. Pulled it forward to correct english position and he is happy happy boy.

I'm confused too. I'd also love someone to post a pic. I don't want to do the wrong thing.

I was originally taught that you should be able to drawn an imaginary line from the front of the saddle down to the elbow.

Now, I don't think that there is one universal saddle placement for all horses. Every one is different. With Phoebe, I place the saddle on her back really far forward and then slide it back until I feel it hit the sweet spot where it seems to fit in the contour of her back. Here is a pic - would be better if she was standing still, but you get the idea.

My issue is trying to figure out which gullet to use. I have heard 3 fingers of space for dressage saddles, but everyone's fingers are different. Is there a better way to measure without buying the whole ez change gullet kit?

In your photograph, the girth is way back over the belly. Just the position that Primero hated.

Ok, Big horn endurance saddle.....too far up? His back is short.
