Got a phonecall this morning from a friend who said that a horse at my old dressage barn had a heart attack during the lesson before hers. She said it just dropped to the ground and died right under the owner. How horrific. It happened last week. I think I'd be on valium still. My friend said she already has a new horse being shipped to her.

I suppose everyone copes in their own way. I can't honestly say how I'd deal with that kind of tragedy.

The rider went to the hospital but my friend said she was bruised and upset more than hurt. The barn had the horse untacked and buried within an hour. My friend said the whole thing felt surreal......it was delt with so fast.

The poor lady. I hope, that it's best for her, that they buried him. That seems too fast for me, too.

When I put Ray down, I couldn't deal quickly with getting things out of the way. It was a day long experience. I held his head for the injection and positioned him in the grave. I took some hairs, so I'd have a part of him. I bought a rose and attached it to his favorite tree, under which he is buried. It was the hardest animal related day for me. I feel, that the things I did helped me cope though.

Yes, somehow I think I would want more time. But I guess when you head off to the hospital and your horse is pronounced dead.....what can you do? I wonder if she had time to say goodbye.

What an aweful feeling that must have been. Many prayers and hugs headed the of way of the rider/owner. What a tragedy. :(

How scary, I try not to worry about thing like that. Or stressing about things that are beyond my power, but it still happens. All we can do is trust that God will take great care of our beloved animals. Prayer going out to the owner and all who came into the life of that horse.

People deal with horses differently. As weird as it may seem for us horselover's, many people look at them as utility truck or an SUV. They are a tool for fun or work.

That is an awful scary way to loose a horse though...it could have been so much worse. I saw one that had a heart attack during a race once, and it was awful. Deer hunters kill a few every year by not conditioning the horses and then running them up the mountain.

Burying horses is illegal here. You are required to take them to the dump. Yea, Right. When I put Tina down I rented a back-hoe and had my brother come and bury her right here in the back yard. What they dont' know can't hurt ME ;-)

Oh, pasofantasy...that made me tear up! I just rode my 21 year old this afternoon, after a long time of not being in the saddle. He was perfect and really gave me a nice ride...then I let a very nice lady who had never rode a Paso Fino before ride him...she came away with a smile on her face. She's now interested in my little mare for sale...what a good salesman he is!
The day I have to let him go is going to be a bad one... :(

that happened once to Monty R's faviorite horse on his place in CA, it just dropped dead while he was riding. Hard times in life are unavoidable, you can't enjoy life without love, but real love takes risks and can create major heartake.

I have had to bury a few of my horses. I always dig the grave by hand, with a shovel. That is my way of dealing with it. That gives me time to think about the situation.
