Hello Georgia and Carolina members...saw on the news that you've had a nasty ice storm and power outage.

I'm hoping all of you and your horses are okay!!!

Now, if you'd all be so good as to CHECK IN and let us know you are fine???

(I guess this is one advantage of no trees!)

I think most of the problems occured north of Atlanta and towards NCarolina. Mountainy, lots of trees and higher elevation for more freezing action.

I checked on the outside kitties at 1am and it was sleeting and freezing on whatever it hit, but the concrete and roads were not icy. When I got up in the morning everything had a good coating of icicles and the evergreen plants/trees were drooping with the weight of the ice.

Nada here in NW GA, but bad weather frequently splits above and below us on its way east... except in '93 when a 'thunder blizzard' slipped into Coosa Valley and sat there for a couple of days - and dumped almost 2 feet of snow in an area that has never seen a snow blower!

Nasty and cold and icey as heck. That is what today was. The roads were fine, but the trees were covered. We were without power for a good portion of the day.

Went to check on the critters and Lady was standing out in the freezing rain and shivering. She could barely whicker at me. The other 3 were standing under the barn and looking smug. I brought Lady in, put her in the stall, toweled her off and fed her some warm feed. She is fine now.

I feel sorry for all of the animals in my area that have no shelter besides trees!

Been miserable weather for two days. Power was out from about 7:00 this morning to about 5:00 this evening. At the end of our road there was a tree over one power line and another power line across the road. Apparently this was not a big deal for the power company to leave lying across the road all day with people driving over it. Thankfully, they did eventually come and fix it. I was begining to wonder how we would keep from freezing over night.

Horses are fine although they don't like it when the ice falls off the roof of the barn and some of them have a bit too much energy to be in the barn. People are really cold and not liking the mud. If it is going to be this cold and miserable, we could at least have some snow!!!

Was right in the middle of it in Hendersonville NC
1" ice/sleet on ground when I awoke [was still falling]
trees with 1/2"+ ice breaking and falling on powerlines.
I was the 2nd person into work [other person lived next door]
Lost all power to both buildings, sent everyone home at noon.
What a mess

I left to drive to TN, got to Ashville [18 miles] and no ice just rain.
Home now and nice and comfortable This is going to be a "sleeping baby night" [I hope]

We are far enough east that we got very little ice...just cold rain yesterday. The sun is out today, and the temp will be near 50, so no complaints from me! Has anyone heard from Lori West? She is in the icy area in the mountains.

Well I got all worried about the horses in the freezing rain and with only 4 stalls and 9 horses having to share them and the over hang. I figured I would lock up Two and Gally in Noche and Rebels stalls, the boys could get under the overhang and the other 5 schould be good on the other side. Carlos is good about sharing with any mare and Pluma works her charm and can get in with anyone else.

Well woke up to the sound of horses running and squeeling. So figured someone got out of where they were suppose to be. Found Noche, Rebel and Carlos running and playing along the fence. They looked like pigs that had just crawled out of the waller. Don't know if they had fallen or been rolling but were covered in mud and muck. Walked around the barn to find Porcy and Maggie taking a swim in the pond.

I guess they know what is best and we haven't a clue. That or they just couldn't stand there own stink and had to try to get it off. The stalls and over hangs looked as if 20 horses had spent the week. So I spent the afternoon cleaning up and re shaving the stalls. Which is something I only have to do every other month or so. I have no Idea how some of you put up with mucking twice a day. NO WAY JUST NO WAY

Boyd ..It would probably take a week of twice a day (I do once) stall cleanings to equal the mess you had!
We had ice yesterday and then rain but the driveway was glazed over and all the aisleways to turn out where it was packed snow (and around the run ins) is packed ice.Had all the horses in the barn last night expecting the worst ,so spent the morning salting and putting stone down (had to do that by hand..new salt spreader does not like stone.. )Eating lunch now and will turn everyone out clean the barn and bring them back in.

We got power back on a couple of hours ago after about 36 hours. Of all the luck we ran out of grain for the horses and had to make the 40 mile round trip run to the feed store yesterday in the middle of the whole mess. Yes we had intended to get it earlier but got tied up in town and couldn't get there in time. Hundreds of trees down - we had to cut trees in the road just to get out and luckily got some help from a neighbor - trees down on the road all the way to the feed store and back. The ignition switch on the generator wouldn't turn - the key just went round and round and it was too late to get anyone when we needed it so we were without water for about 18 hours. The horses all have spring water thank goodness and our boarded horses have a system where the water is channeled from the tin roof into their water tub and the other one uses a generator and a spring for water thank goodness. A big pine fell on the hay shelter and bent the frame but it's still water proof thank goodness. Another tree fell on the front of the horse trailer but no damage. Next door neighbor had to lock his cows into one section of his property because he has so many trees on his fence. Trees all over the fence where two of our girls are boarded. Luckily it's a large pasture. All but two of our guys are blanketed but would the two who aren't stay under shelter??? Of course not. They stayed out in the freezing rain and shivered. GRRRRRRR.

The power pole right in front of the preperty was shattered into three parts, the transformer fell off and was lying in the road and the power lines were in the road also. Luckily when the tree hit it broke the power line though so it wasn't hot.

Sorry - we were just too busy to take pictures - maybe tomorrow. It really smells like Christmas around here with all the pine trees splintered all over the place. They snapped off about thirty feet in the air. Also where two of our horses are boarded their mobile was hit by two trees and their house was hit by two more. What a mess - but they do have heavy equipment so it won't be so hard for them to take care of it. We were out there with a bow saw cutting by hand because one of chain saw is in town and the other is terrible to start so we didn't even try.

Well we're all save and we haven't heard of any injures yet but just got TV back on so haven't heard local news yet. We had a bad one last year when Brandy got hurt but this one is a lot worse. We just have less trees in a vulnerable position since they already fell.

Hope everyone else in the area is OK????

I'm 30 minutes sw of Raleigh, and just had some ice glazed on tree branches, and mostly on the border of the bad weather. We had 2" of cold rain all day, and now only 4-5" on making up for our rain deficit for the year.

I received an email this morn from someone in the area Denise/Kelly I were moving to, so power must be on. That area and west did have lots of power outages from trees ladened with ice as shown on the local news this morn. It reminded me of the bad ice storm we had in early December last year where power was off with many trees down. I'm set up to heat with propane gas and also have a woodstove, so if power goes off I will still have heat and a place to warm up food.

Hope everyone that got hit with the ice/snow recovers fast. We're in a mud slosh outside. Another storm is predicted for tonight and in the morn. Guess winter is about "officially" here.

We lost power for about two hours during the day and it flickered a couple of times other than that we had no cable for two days witch means no internet. The hubbie told me this morning that it was back up. He played cards early this morning. We were set. We watched DVDs I forgot we had. We baked cookies and made Russian Tea and donutes. We had a blast. It was fun untill the girls left yesterday.
