We have had outrageous wind, sleet, snow and rain here all night. I was so restless, I just felt tense all night. (our house is surrounded by trees) I got up early and looked out into the pasture and had to stare and stare and stare, I could not believe my eyes. There is a huge pine tree down in the paddock, mere feet from the fence line. I am so thankful it didn't hit one of my boys or the fence. Mojo would have been gone in a second, he knows a downed fence is a good way to go exploring.
It is hard to believe considering how tiny the pasture is, and how many trees surround it that the fence didn't get hit. I can't beleive that the horses seem so calm about it, I would think that it made a heck of a noise coming down.

Man that is lucky!
Years ago we had a tornado go through our area. I lived at that time in a mobilhome park.
The next day I saw that EVERY tree 8 of them, had been torn apart or snapped off at the ground and were laying paralel(sp) to our mobilhome!
One had fallen on our roof going breaking the cealing just a little and flipped over and layed next to the rest!
I had a lot of fun with the call to the insurance guy.
ME: I have good news and bad news for ya.
HIM: Give me the good news.
ME: We no longer have any trees around our house!
HIM: UH OH.

That is very lucky Barbara...many years ago, my sister's fiance' was killed by a deadfall tree. Came down behind him and broke his neck. He never even knew it was happening.

Maybe you can get a better idea of how big this tree was...

When we had the land cleared the guys wouldn't take the pine because it isn't any good for wood stoves, so it was one of 2 big trees in the paddock. The other tree is that giant maple I'm always taking pictures of.

Barbara,
Though I love maple trees, are you aware that the fallen leaves are toxic to horses? For a while it was said only the red Maple was an issue. The newest info I have is that all maples are suspect.

Just make sure they have plenty of hay and get out there with the leaf blower every day. You were lucky. Our area wasn't lucky at all. Trees on fences everywhere.

You think we're kidding!! You should have seen us out there everyday with a leaf rake when Sultan and Brandy became addicted to acorns. A huge oak tree was right outside their paddock. The oak leaves aren't really very good for them either. What a pain that was. Thank goodness they aren't in that paddock anymore. We just put an electric fence outside the drip line of our huge red maple and kind of keep an eye out to see if too many leaves are falling outside it.
