Not long ago, I bought an older Peruvian mare. Before I got her, she spent at least the last year in a small lot and was never ridden. I rode her before I bought her. She was go go go but so fat that I didn't want to push her as she would be dripping in sweat after just a few minutes of riding. Now I have her home and adjusted to her heard mates. Since she is in a 10 acre pasture, she gets some exercise, has lost some weight and gotten in a bit better shape. I have started riding her and found she is very stiff and unyeilding in her neck and face. She stills wants to go go go and I can hardly get her to walk. I am thinking working on flexing and one rein stops on her to improve her flexibility and to give me some speed control. However when I pull her head to the side to flex her, she goes in endless fast circles. She seems to get very anxious when held back in any way. Any suggustions on how I can retrain this mare to relax and give. She is quiet on the ground, knows nothing about longing. will tie and trailer but paws if she has to be tied long.

sorry it took a while to see this post. i havent spent much time in this forum.

you must teach lateral flexion on the ground first, befort attempting it under saddle. do lots of lateral flexion on the ground with her, then work with the mare under saddle.

I had a paso with a similar story. Spent his first 9 years in a small pen. I did lots of lateral flexion on the ground first and it helped alot. At first he tried to spin, but I just held him until he stopped and relaxed, then released the pressure. Then when we started doing it in the saddle he knew what I wanted him to do. I also did lots of cirlces and figure 8's in the saddle around cones, etc.
