there split at the bridle, but single in hand ???

i'm not riding with them untill i get them hooked up right, or should i >?...quito has softened at the poll for his first time....and did it as soon as i put them on him...the bit is a broken sweet iron with copper dots..he's in no discomfort, just being an obedient good boy for once...i led him like this for two days...no head shaking, he pays better attention, and walks proud... :D http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b389/finolover/quito1.jpg

These split reins are used [when properly adjusted] to put pressure on the bit or the curb first, depending on adjustment, it can be either.

Normally when I've seen them used the curb gets tension first and then the bit., they tend to lift the head without getting into the mouth too much.

I think they are fer ppl who have a hard time handling two reins at a time. ;-)

So I guess you use them with a pelham bit or with a bit and bosal combination???

quito has really come around lately!
i guess it's been a year since i last rode him,he stays focused longer, not nearly as flighty....i'm workin on a few last flinchy spots.
at first he had fear issues, i had anger issues that developed into anger and fear...
after i worked out my issues, he was a different horse.

having the reins hooked over the saddle horn there, applies just enough pressure to form him up, and keep his attention.. it turns a loose limbed stroll into a semi collected walk, anytime he's uncomfortable he will let you know, by mouthing and head shaking!
we've done this thing for about five or six hours with no protest from quito

You might get a protest from him tomorrow! It's a good idea to work up things like this over time. It takes a while for a horse to develop the neck and back muscles to be collected, and just like you, they can become sore when asked to a lot when they're not in condition for it.

He is tucked there, make sure you give him release from the pressure too...to reward him for being tucked.

that was over a two day period......and thats the first
time i've EVER seen him tuck...pro trainer had a double rein, knobbed bosal and his tounge tied down...first time i've ever seen him soften any time for anyone...i gave him breaks when we stopped to rest...i tire quickly walking any distance
