I have a Mr. Kitty (aka Puddin) that I've had for about 8 years. And since he spends all his time at the condo, he thinks everything in it belongs to him and nothing is sacred from him. Well, recently I found a little baby snapping turtle in the road and I brought it home "for Puddin". I have a nice 12 gallon tank I set up and put some feeder fish in with him and named him "Snappy the Turtle." Now Mr. Kitty would spend hours sitting in front of the tank like it's his TV watching Snappy and the fish swim about.
*Please note that I think Snappy is a male turtle....b/c he is determined that he can fit himself behind the air filter tube. There is plenty of room to swim around the tube, but Snappy feels he should spend most of his day w/his head and front feet outstreached behind the tube struggling to squeeze the rest of his shell thru the passage. Anyway, keeps it entertaining for Mr. Kitty.
So for Christmas, I decided Snappy needed one of those floating rocks for turtles to "sun" on. For several days Snappy stayed away from the menacing object floating above and I wondered if I'd just wasted my money. But then...one day I caught Snappy sorta half way on his rock and in the water. When he saw me he scooted himself into the water. I kept checking to see if Snappy was on his rock, but never caught him again. But last night I came in and found him fully on his rock, neck stretched out in sunning position. He promptly crawled off the deep end of his rock and pretended I never caught him there. But ever since then...I continually find him on his rock. He still keeps a eye on me while I'm walking about, but he's starting to feel pretty secure up there. :D Now...if the rainy season would just start up again, he could dine on his favorite food....tadpoles! 8-)

Sounds cute Lori. Unless at a pet store, I don't think I've ever seen one.
No native turtles in northern Utah. No armidillos either. Mater of fact the only 'hard cases' around here drive great big 4x4's with big mud tires and lots of chrome, and YES, a gun rack in the window. ;-)

I have a female chihuahua, about a year old, one of the taller 'deer' type built ones. She'd never make the show ring, but she is adorable just the same. I've been looking for an affordable male chi for over a year as well. Finally I gave up. Up here they want a ton of money I just don't have. Last week I gave up looking, and bought her a companion, a miniature dachshund, and it's been great! Yesterday, I turn on the computer, and what do I see? A purebred double registered male for FREE! (FIGURES!!!) So off I go,,, 10 hours later I've made the trip there and back and as I type this, this adorable little fat boy (he needs a diet big time) is sitting on my lap cuddling as the other two rugrats play at my feet. He's only a year old. Apparently he has a bad shoulder and once in a while needs an aspirin. I think more likely as he's proved already...he tends to be a little water fountain squirting whatever he likes (including my bare foot when I wasn't paying attention this morning..sigh!!) Oh well, housebreaking can be a pain, but he's a doll so I'm ready to start him from the beginning. I'll post pics of the troup when I get them.

I found a turtle (not a snapper) in Florida years ago..she was the size of my thumbnail back then ..Becky named her Shelly.
Shelly went on all our travels with us in her tank in the back of the van and even went into Canada to visit friends there  Hey the border guard didnt ask..so we didnt tell.
;-)
Poor Shelly died on the way to Boise as she was in the trailer (cargo) and her water froze  she was 5 inches across by then. We sure miss catching crickets for her and watching her tear them up to eat

Songbird,
RE: the little Chi that needs aspirin on occasion. We have 2 Pomerainiansthat also on occasion have hip problems. My vet has put them on "Metacam" The bottle is about $40 bucks but with tiny dogs it lasts forever. I believe it's a bit milder on the little bellies too. I only give it when the female has aches & pains. You may want to talk to your vet about it.

I think my pets are spoiled too. The hamster has so many stuff and toys in his cage there's barely room to walk. The Chihuahua has a night light, because my mom doesn't want him sleeping in the dark, so does our mutt outside. Crazy mother of mine

Thanks Paula. I'm taking my other two to the vets tomorrow for checkups so I'm going to see if she can see him at the same time, I'll ask her then about it. Thanks very much :-)

I've seen the little snapping turtles and the full size big as a pumpkin size too. Whatever the size when they snap (bite), they don't let go. We had a full size one bite a beagle's nose once growing up (we lived next to a pond) and had to cut his neck about off to let him release the poor beagle's nose. Lori, have you tried sticking your finger in front of his face...I'd bet he'd bite and hang on dangling from your finger.
I like turtles and have had them for pets, but snapping turtles fingers and pets beware .....why they have their name..and they snap fast....
I bet Snappy is cute though....

One of the guys I work with has a snapping turtle for a pet. That thing is wild! It did stay in the house, but kept outgrowing the tanks so now it has its own dog lot complete with kiddy pool & house outside. Every year in the winter he digs up under his house and hibernates. The first year he was out they thought he got loose until he reappeared the next spring. That thing is mean also!

They've outlawed the ownership of turtles in Alberta. Apparently they often carry samonella poisoning ... though I don't know if that applies to snappers. I know it applies to both Eastern and Western Painted Turtles (aka "Red Earred Sliders"), which were the ones a person used to buy in the pet store here...along with the odd little plastic turtle "aquarium" that had water around the outside and an island complete with little plastic palm tree in the middle.
Here you can purchase land turtles ("Box turtles") and tortoises, but no others...and if you already owned one (which we did), you actually had to go and have its carapace photocopied and registered with the government!

Snapping turtles like fish. Watch out fishy. When Smappy gets big enough to eat you, you better run.
We find alot of box turtles around hear. My sister has 4. All different sizes. She named them Any, Menni, Minni, and Moe. She also has 9 dogs and 12 cats. One of her cats though like to watch Chicken Little.
Lori, Have fun with your new pet. Pictures are great.

bailey, lol Snappy is already turning his nose up at the feeder fish and only eating the Neons and guppies. I figured he'd eat those. I can't wait for tadpole season for him. He tears those up. ;-)

Are you sure Snappy is eating your fish and it isn't your cat fishing? I know mine would!!!
He's a cute turtle.
Years ago we caught a crayfish and put him in our tank. He'd snap at the fish and shredded a few fins. Then he got it in his head he wanted to be in the dog water dish instead. He'd climb up the tank heater, out of the tank, fall on the floor, across the floor and into the water dish. He did this 3 times, so he MUST have known where he was going!

Carol- I'm pretty sure it's not the cat. I've had fish before and had problems w/disapearances. lol
That is funny abour the crayfish. I had no idea they could crawl out of the tank.

I used to have Ball Pythons for pet... And I raised rats to feed him in the barn. Reptiles are cool. 8-)
LOL Lori I raised one of those dangerous as crap when they dont fit into a normal tank!
Theres a huge red tail boa in horse country  it escaped when it was roughly 5 feet long... all the chickens next door disappear once in a while =x
we began feeding it rabbits before it escaped. :D

I don't think that is a snapper...the baby that is. That adult DEFINITELY is! This is a photo of a baby snapper... http://www.fishpondinfo.com/snap1.jpg
Not sure what kind of turtle it is, but looks like a yellow belly or a mud turtle to me.
Check out this site...lots of cute babies!

After spending most of the day on the turtle site...I think Snappy might not be a snapper after all..Maybe a striped Mud Turtle?

What a turtle.

Unless you let it sit to long before it becomes soup.

Yes they ARE nuts.
It always surprises me when I go to pethobbyist.com to post pictures, how often I see reptiles, especially compared to dogs and cats (the most common 'pets' in the world). We've had reptiles before, and I'll be #$%!@ if I can think of any reason to take more then 1 (one) picture of them. It's not like they're 'pretty' or doing 'fun' stuff.

I had a sick red eared slider last year so I looked up some sites on the internet to learn about them. It was quite amusing. I didn't know one could get so caught up with turtles. I suppose they think we are crazy too. One board that I went to had a troll that would say nasty things about the demise of turtles and people would get all upset. It was quite the eye opener. I did save the turtle because of what I learned though.

My husband is a biologist and we seem to have a lot of animals at different times. He was into snakes for a few years (I finally had enough..they stink!!). We went to Provo to buy a King snake, to a guy who rasies snakes. He had hundreds of Kings, Corn, Milk, all kinds. Beautiful...but the SMELL!!! http://www.redphage.com/smilies/puke.gif
His entire basement was built in acquariums and snake cabinets. He had to have a huge investment in all that. I couldn't believe anyone could like snakes so much.
