I posted a photo of his 1st bath and 1st time being tied. Then the Vet came as he had a snotty nose and coughing. Well, the Vet gave him med. directly in the vein, and more in the mouth. He left pills to be dissolved in water and given by mouth with a syringe for 3 days. Today is the last day and I have a call into the Vet now because he is still snotty nosed and still coughing. I don't know if I am rushing his recovery or not, but I need to be reassured. He is running and playing and eating like a horse, but I am still worried about him. We leave on vacation Fri. and if he isn't doing better, I will be a nervous wreck. Friends are taking care of him, and I know he will be in good hands, but he is still my baby. He will be 3 months old on the 5th, and growing like a weed. I sure don't like seeing all the mucous coming out of his nose and hearing him cough.

I don't have any first hand experience, but I can tell you're doing all the right things . . . it just takes time the symptoms to clear up. Keep in mind that, when one has a respiratory virus, antibiotics don't cure the virus, they just prevent a secondary infection (like pnuemonia) while the body is fighting off the virus.
When Carol U's Bruiser was ill, it took several days before the symptoms cleared completely. I'm sure he'll be better by the end of the week.

We have the snots and cough going around here. Horses aren't running a fever or going off feed, so we just let it run it's course. It seems to be going around all over the country.

I'd get a culture done. Our stallion had something like that and the vet was very skeptical about doing a culture but he gave us the swab and we cleaned his nostrils really well with normal saline and got the middle of a glob of discharge that hadn't touched his skin and took it in and they called us 24 hours later to get in there and get two different medication because he had gram postitive and negative penecillin resistance bacteria in his sinuses. Our experience with antibiotics has been that if they are going to work they do so quickly - within a day or two. If they don't work, it's viral or a resistant bacteria. Has he been exposed to any new horses or are there any that have come in recently nearby or has anyone petted him that has horses? Our boy got his from a mini that came in from Ohio. It went through the entire barn. Very nasty thing and he felt very bad. Oh - be sure to feed probios while he's on antibiotics or he'll likely get diarrhea.

It is a good sign that he feels fine but horses are kind of like cats - they don't let you know they are sick until they are about to drop. If he's not running a fever it is also a good sign. But a culture is cheap.

Good luck! They can worry you to death!!!

He is doing better today. The Vet was going to come back out but I told him to wait, as his nose was clear today, not blowing snot, and I only heard one small cough. He had his second bath today as he was mud from head to toe and did wonderful. Didn't fight at all. He learns so fast. We are leaving Fri. for vacation, so I told our friends that are taking care of him for us that if he gets worse, be sure to call the Vet, but I am confident that he is on the road to recovery.

Well, I've had both. When Bruiser was about 2 weeks old he was running a feaver and off his feed. Put him on IM antibiotics for 5 days and he cleared right up. For such a bugger, he's great about shots.

THEN we started the snotty nose/coughs Patti has there. Four of my horses have had it now and I've done like Patti, let it run it's course. No fevers and all horses eating fine. It did cost me Rosie's first shows under saddle though, but she's doing fine now and all are clean here now.

Good luck, try not to worry. I do know it is scarrier with the little ones. I use fevers and feed as barometers. If a horse is running a fever or off it's feed THAT is when I worry.

Let us know how he's doing. His evil twin sends his best!
