We use the oral HA, Hyalun with success on our 23 year old mare. I think echo used legend on General in his hocks and was pleased. You might PM her about it. Supposedly the oral works as well as the injectable and supposedly you can use both Adequan and Legend (HA).

yep...have used them both. Best case scenario I had...3 injections Legend (to the hock) given 1 injection a week for 3 weeks...lasted about a year. Injections were to the neck...not the joint...it migrates TO the joint site... I think it was $100.00 per injection.

Hylagun... had it in my own knees..1cc per knee for 5 weeks in a row...works for about a week! Two weeks at most..migrates right out of a BAD joint, even when inkected into the joint. Both brands will migrate out in time.

The vet hospital said they would write me a prescription so I can order online at vet supplies for the Adequan. Interestingly too, is with all the joint lubricant products..know whether they have FDA approval. Also the oral ones that actually list the amt of each ingredient would be the ones to trust more than the ones that don't. Now these products are big business. The vet tech at the vet hospital also said to order the smaller size container to sample it for effect rather than buying the larger quantityto save on cost per unit.

One of our vets says he gets different responses to both from different horses. We haven't tried Adequan ourselves yet. Keep us posted on how it does please.

Lynn...Candice had done research on which product was the "purest"...you might want to PM her, as I don't recall which one it was.

Here is a comparison chart for joint supplements (not the injectibles though)

http://www.pbshorsehealth.com/Joint%20Supplement.pdf

One I found as a supplement I am considering is HYLA RX COMPLETE. Its not on this chart though.

The Adequan has not been tested for use Breeding Horses (disclaimer). will look into that further. One vet site that lists it and Legend for sale is allivet.com (Allivet Animal Health) out of Hialeah, FL. Anyone have experience dealing with them?

Thanks for everyone's advice

We bought our HA in the oral form. The brand is Hyalun and we got it twice from Horse Warehouse with no problems and very quick shipping.

From my recent research, any of the oral joint supplements would be used for more for maintenance after more intensive treatment such as that IM or IV with Adequan ( 7 doses 4 days apart) or Legend ( 3 doses).

It bothers me that the Adequan states...not reseached for affect on breeding horses. The deal with the oral treatments is that horses being herbivores stomach lining absorbs differently then what humans do. I'm not clear of the significance of that, but that was the thought process...not easily proven as effective as those that goes straight into the blood stream. Maybe someone who knows biology or pharmacuticals well can shed some light on that .. herbivore vs carnivore degree of absorption thru stomach????

I've been told that the oral HA is just as effective as the injected but have no point of comparison since we only used it on three horses. Two had injuries and UGA told us to use the oral with them and the other is 23, was trained young and is a bit arthritic. All three improved. Two made a complete recovery and the older mare is really quite sound in comparison but we'll put her back on it just because of her age and being trained very young. It won't hurt her and might help keep her more comfortable.

Lynn, I'm in the process of doing both the adequan injections and HylaRx oral with Bianca - she's had her first 4 shots 5 days apart (IM in the neck as well) and is doing much better arthritis-wise. We'll do them monthly now and keep her on the HylaRx - ask me again in 30 days how she's doing. They are quite expensive, around $50 per shot but well worth it if it helps her.

Does anyone know how long the oral Hyalun stays in the body? The injections used to last up to a year...
I'm thinking of trying to breed my old mare again...she is doing so well, but it will involve taking her off the Hyalun. Is there a joint supplement you can give to pregnant mares???
I've been debating this for some time...but she loves to be a mommy, is a good mommy, and her joints are doing fantastic, so much so I wonder if we could do some light riding with her. My vet doesn't seem to think there would be any problem with her carrying a foal, IF we could get her to sustain a pregnancy. I figure now that we're doing our own AI, we could just keep dumping semen in her ...if she takes, great, if not, we're only out the price of the tubes and pipettes.
It just doesn't seem fair that this magnificent horse can't have just one more baby. :(

So why do you have to take her off Hyalun?

Our older mare has been off it for a couple of months and is a little ouchy again. I think the dose is so small it probably doesn't last long.

If you have to take her off it why not do the injections in the joint?
