Just went out to feed and my 15 yr old silver llama female was dead...Luckily the girl coming to help me breed Star just brought her hubby and truck so we got her loaded to be buried. It was 100 today with a heat index of 105 but she was bloated before she died..I think something else happened..I would have thought the heat would have bothered one of the blacks first...

Like a horse...her mother is still here..the sad part is her baby followed her in the truck all the way out of the pasture..

This is Jasmine...I have owned her for over 5 yrs..she has had 3 nice babies for me..I am just sick I am worried it was the heat and I did not shear them this year..I have guilt..It has been hotter though this was not the hottest day..and they have NOT looked stressed..I saw her at 11 or 12 moved them from one field to another she seemed ok but had a big belly on her..baby is 10 weeks old..she has friends..I hope she will be ok...

So sorry to hear about the loss of your lama. She looked very sweet and what a cute little baby. Don't blame yourself though! It it were the heat I would think you would have noticed her acting funny way before she died.

Do llamas colic? Could that have caused the bloat?
:( Poor baby.

Yes but she was not thrashing or anything earlier like you would see a horse do..this llama did something else last year..she was down for almost 3 days and banamine and stall rest and she came out of it...She seemed ok other then not moving with the heard she was a little behind today when I moved from pasture to pasture and she was fat and was a little slow but her belly has looked like she was due to foal again...
I just went out to feed and her baby met me in the barn looking around and humming...she was missing her mother...Tomorrow I will shave them all..they were all shaved June last year...but not shaved in 2004 I wonder what MD's high temp was in 2004?
She was dead in only a few hours as I go to the barn all day....and when I found her she looked dead for awhile...
Im very upset over this... :(

Don't beat yourself up about this, sometimes there is just nothing you can do when you don't have any obvious signs of something wrong. She only provided you with little 'niggles of oddity', it sounds like, to me.
I'm sorry her loss has you feeling so guilty. Try not to feel guilty, I'm certain you take excellent care of your critters....sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

I am Sooooo sorry about your loss.
I felt tremendous guilt when Luin died last week. No signs of anything. Don't feel guilty over it. You did what you could and sometimes nature does what it wants. She gave you 3 babies to remember her by. = )
I hope the baby will be ok.

Aw, Appy! I am very sad for you, but you know, sometimes something just goes wrong and there's nothing you can do about it. That happened to my miniature jenny. To this day, I don't know what killed her. One evening she was fine ... came in with her sheep for grain ... and the next morning she was dead! No thrashing. No nothing. She just laid down and died.
I worry for your cria though. 10 weeks is not very old. If there is a llama milk replacer available, I'm not aware of it. Poor baby.

Oh Shelley - I'm so sorry. Don't beat yourself up...you are in tune with your animals, she didn't give you any signals she was ill.
Will one of the other Momma's adopt the 10 week old? I sure hope so.

:hug Gosh Shelly that is SO sad but try not to feel SO guilty and I hope her baby is okay. It was sad to read how she followed the truck out of the field.........heart wrenching.
Judy and Chloe the Bengal who is STILL waiting for her ride home but has decided to entertain herself by prowling around outside her kennel. There 'must' by something she can get into before she leaves.
(yes all the felines have "free" time outside of their kitty kennels at the CatSpaw)

Shelley, so sorry to hear about your llama. It's been very hot here to (near 110 for many days). It's finally cooling off a bit. Supposed to be in the low 90s today.
I know horses seem to get along fine in the heat. It's not your fault. I'm sure she had plenty of water and a cool place to stand.....
Hope baby will be okay :(

Just saw this thread Shelley...I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it goes with the territory of having a number of animals, loosing one now and then, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.
:hug Hugs to you.
