Yesterday, we had a really bad thunder storm. Lots of close lightning and really heavy rain. The horses were upset about it. I think Tario must have stepped in a hole or slipped, but anyway he is three legged now. It looks as though he aggravated an old bowed tendon.
Tario is 28. I gave him 2 grams of bute and slathered DMSO on the tendon. What else would be good to do for him? He isn't mine so I can't invest a lot into his care.

I agree with barb since he isnt yours..or call the owner..if it is a bow there are many newer things they can do..or it should be support wrapped possibly with a steroid /furacin mix..but if you dont know what you are doing you can do more harm than good..(actually you wrap both legs so the other is supported also)

Linda - cold hose him a couple of times a day as well as the bute/DMSO, I always find this very healing/therapeutic.
Good luck - poor baby

Agree with cold hose, DMSO and bute for a short time. Chinook fell in a shoulder deep hole - front and rear - on an endurance ride, and we think injured a stifle. She recovered fully on just pasture rest but for a bowed tendon I'd try to get the owner to get a vet check. MSM is good for just about anything as is HA (hyaluronic acid) and you can give it orally - brand name we use is Hyalun. Our vet surgeon recommended it for Brilliant after his surgery and hip fracture. We also give it to Brandy and our twenty three year old mare with several arthritic joints and she's pretty sound now.

If you DMSO him, don't wrap right away, wait a few hours. That stuff is HOT!
I really like Uptite Poultice - its messy, but great for wrapping until the major part of the swelling is down (daily for 2-4 days), then to switch to DMSO.
Everyone has their favorite ways to treat these. Big thing too is to limit his movement with stall rest or a small pen.
