Three possibilities:
1-lab made a mistake - maybe hair samples mislabeled
2. wrong hair samples sent - especially if multiple samples sent in for testing at the same time
3.http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/livestock/horses/facts/info_congenital.htm - scroll down or search this page for hermaphrodite...

Mare could be an 'XY' mare

If the mare is truly XY there are two cases like this in humans I remember from genetics class.

In one, the individual is XY but has no testosterone receptors so does not have male sex characterisitcs and is a non reproductive female. There is no uterus. The ******l canal has a blind end.

The second case that is XY, for some reason that I have forgotten, presents as a female until puberty at which time the male genetalia will emerge and the individual will become a normal male who is able to reproduce.

Then there are some that have both sex characteristics and some sex organs from each and generally at puberty choose which sex they wish to live as. Some have surgery to remove the sex organs of the opposite sex. They are generally sterile.

So I would defnitely have her checked again since I would think it would be a mistake. Has the mare cycled??? An XY mare wouldn't cycle because they have no female sex organs - ovaries or uterus.
