View Full Version : Paso/Friesian cross.
Anyone ever heard of one?
Is it feasible because of the size difference? I.e. Paso mare, Friesian stud
A gaited Friesian would be awesome.

I have a large Paso mare that I have considered breeding to a Friesian. If it gaits that would be great if not I think it would make a nice dressage prospect.
Draft mares were bred to shetlands and vice versus in an experiment to see what would be produced and if the shetlands would have too big of babies. The draft mares and the shetland mares had normal size foals. The foals born to the shetland mares grew bigger than their dams and the draft mares foals didn't get as big as theirs.
Thank you, Patti. That answers the size thing. :)
Some one told me that paso crosses only pass gait 30% of the time.
I reckon that gives me almost a 1/3 chance the baby would.
Interesting. :)

I almost accidently had one....they put a Freisian stallion behind Zar at the expo, and you KNOW what a hottie SHE is! He tried to climb over the top of the stall (only 12 feet high) and 'almost' made it. You should have seen the look on her face! LOL
You didn't accidently open her and his stall? :)

LOL..NO! She almost had a heart attack watching him climb the walls to get to her! Zar will never score high on the braveheart scale! LOL
I think I want one... while Clarissa is still breedable.

What are you going to do if it does not turn out gaited?
Don't want to be pesimistic, but the horse would is so full of mix and grade horses that are in need of homes.
That's another thing. I generally don't believe in crosses.
but. i've never not loved any horse i've had, so regardless of gait, it would be loved, rode, and taken care of.
Odds are it won't happen. I figure their stud fee is probably about the same as a new truck. lol

No worse than Paso stud fees - found a bunch for $1000-! There is a Fresian farm about 20 minutes from me too - but I don't see any stud fees listed for them - although they have a couple of horses for sale at over 14k each! WOW!

From what I have seen it is cheaper to breed a different breed to a Friesian then another Frisian. Not bad stud prices at all. $1000 or so.

One of the Friesian registries was doing a stallion service auction a year ago, you could get a breeding for $500-$750. I almost bid on one near me but I need to sell a few horses before I breed again. I have had three QH/Paso crosses, one gaited, one did a foxtrot and the other had a nice easy trot. So the cross had a better gait than their mother. You can register 1/2 Friesian, and they seem to go for good money.

Are you trying to make a Peruvian paso? ;-) It's said to include Friesian blood in addition to the breeds in paso finos. I found a site for you, that mentions it.

uh uh, I want the looks of a friesian and the ride of a paso.
Then I'd get an andalusian! Sounds like you are after the ultimate rennaissance horse.
I've spent about a year working for a Freisian barn on Teusdays, you don't want to cross them with a Paso. For one thing, Friesians are a serious TROT breed, its difficult to get them to canter because the trot is so ingrained in them as the gait of preference and its a BIG trot. YOur chances of getting gait are pretty slim. My friend knows someone that did a Friesian x Paso and it was a disaster esp in the attitude dept, but then I don't know a thing about the actual horses bred. Skeletally, there is a HUGE difference between these breeds, and you really have no idea what you are going to get. You mnight get a 'black paso with feathers" that trots (might as well get a Fell Pony) or a huge thing with skinny legs and way too much brio for its own good... that trots. Or you could get something very pretty that has no idea what gait it ought to be doing and need a LOT of training to sort its legs out. And you could get downright ugly - not al Frieisans are that gorgeous in the head. Friesians also seem to have quite a problem with stifles early on.
Get an andy.

Hate to add more, but keep in mind your location. I am in Southern Florida and I have heard of only 3 friesians that lived here...all three died heat related illnesses. They are a snow lovin breed 8-)
Ok. I appreciate that info. :)

As far as the size difference...it will be O.K. I worked for an Arab breeder who crossed Arabs on Shetlands to produce the ultimate "show pony"...and we used to cross a 16HH AQHA horse on Shetland mares, and they never had any foaling problems either. The foal gets as big as the womb allows, but quickly outgrows its mother once born.
As far as buying an Andalusian to get gait...best be very careful as most gait is now bred OUT of Andalusians as dressage people don't like gait.
Andalusians USED to be gaited...I used to ride them all the time in the late 1960's...but now you'd be hard pressed to find one with gait.

Yes, I do think I'd go ride a Fresian before I bred to one. The trot is horendous, so you'd beter be VERY serious about wanting a big trot.
Why not try a Lusitania Paso Fino cross? I have a friend doing this for a dressage horse. I'm thinking she'll get something very much like a Trote y Galope horse...very Iberian looking.
