The old trimmer we had did an ok job, they tended to crack/chip pretty quick after and he was almost never in town so I looked around.

Trinket's feet did not need it, but the ASB stud did. I have been dreading this day.

I like this guy alot. I gave him an extra $15 for Merlin acting like a putz. How much do you tip your trimmer? Per horse or time spent or both?

He told us to cut back just a bit on his feed. That as big as he was, he should hit 17 hands at least and his conformation was awesome. Said he would make a great dressage horse. At least that confirms what I thought lol He has that long extended floating trot and made for the ring.

He also does training and if we still have him when we move, I will use him.

He said Merlin did better then a lot of horses he does. His main problem was wanting to bite him in the butt when he had his back towards him doing his front feet. Or trying to bite me in the face. And I have never seen a horse with his back leg up, strike out with a front foot, chest high and straight out, so fast in my life. He missed becauase I was on high alert to him being a putzhead. He did decent otherwise. But it was almost 100 and he was sweating buckets, so was I and I was just trying to hold him. I think next time he does the back feet, I will tie him and see how he does for that.

He does do mustang rolls and pointed out what he was doing to 2 of the feet and how he will correct a flare and well darn I forgot what he said about the other. He said next trim should fix them up, so it's nothing bad or serious.

So, I survived a hoof trim with Merlin, yeah!

I am bad, I don't tip my farrier.

I didn't think I needed to.

That's a new one on me - we've never tipped our farriers or trimmers.... and we tend to tip well when we do... At $35/trim - even if it takes an hour - that isn't bad money. Minimum basic wage and work-for-tips kinds of jobs - yes. Farriers/trimmers - no.

I don't tip my farrier either. I pay $40 a trim and with 3 horses it takes about an hour and 15 min. I used to give money with a Christmas card, but he yelled at me once, accusing me of getting advice from another farrier. So, nothing extra for him! I wish Abbie (or Coreen) lived closer, there are not many natural trimmers where I live!

I never heard of tipping unless you have an emergency and they come real fast ..esp on a weekend...next time have a figure 8 noseband on the horse so he cant bite...That will probably be more appreciated than a tip..if he is as quick as you say he might just get the guy if you dont ..or a soft muzzle like the grazing ones..but the figure 8 you can make tight enough he cant get his mouth open

Good for you Jenn!

I've tipped before...when we spent time working with a horse that hadn't stood on 3 legs before. But, I don't tip normally.

If not a muzzle you might try cross ties to keep the horse from nibbling the farrier.

Well he did get us in next day. I just did not want to wait any longer. It was $25 a trim, but since it took nearly an hour and Merlin was a putz, I figured it fair to tip him. Guess maybe next time since I get barely $5-7 an hour and only work a few hrs a day, he cleans up more then I do a week LOL

But I am pretty happy with the trim and I have had horses trimmed by a bunch and this guy was pretty good. He would have been quicker but was not his fault Melrin wanted to lean on him and be naughty.

Trinket's feet pretty much keep up on their own if there is a bit of rock in there or harder surface. Now it's all poofy dirt so nothing to wear them off with. But hers loook like they were just done and it's been a few months.

Ok so I tip if he gets me in quick or takes a long time because of naughty horses but not otherwise. I even tried to go get him a drink but he had his own.
