I have a PPR mare (22 yrs) doing nothing now.I have way to many horses but keep thinking I should breed her to a PPR stud to keep the lines going. What are some of the best choices?Anything good in Fl?And tho she is a good mare, are her lines good enough?#1740584

Can't find the mare with that number.

There may be a PPR stallion called "Omega" in South Florida. Owner is Jose O. Giraldo in Wellington, FL.

He is by Omega de Bucanero out of a Kopeki mare. I haven't located the horse yet, but that cross was successful in PR. Mr. Oliver was crossing Don Coqui with that mare line and the horses were looking good.

There's more than this, I'm sure, but this one that I remember at the moment. Barbara Priess also has PPR stallions too.

Barb P has Corito de Vez, a lovely Palomino stallion. 8-) Extremely smooth too.

Well he's not exactly in FL, but we are standing an exquisite Pure PR Colt here in North Carolina. His name is Aguinaldo del Viento, he is a son of Campanero and the only son of Azucar del Viento (Labriego X Nectar de Campanero) who is a multi Grand Champion of the Feria Dulce Sueno, she is Fuera de Concurso (out of contest) in Puerto Rico, and one of the most legendary show horses of this breed. Aguinaldo just turned 3 and was imported in late 2005.

If you would like more information or a video, please feel free to contact me.

Just go to that "other site", and right click...select properties, and copy and paste the image url between the Img tags, you see above.

I didn't resize...too lazy.

Can't find the mare with that number

did you try just 17405 taking the 84 off the end? They used to include the year of birth at the end of the reg. number ..

De nada...I wanted to see him too. ;-)

Does El Cardenal have a website? I would enjoy learning more about them.

unfortunately a website is on my to do list - we had a brief site up on our trainer Wilson Ruiz, but we took that down and haven't had time to do anything else.

We are probably going to hold off on doing anything until our new farm is completed - we are relocating the farm to Charleston, SC in mid 2007.

We mainly concentrate on Colombian horses, but Wilson, along with myself got our start on the Pure Puerto Rican horses, and still keep ties in the breed. Wilson started, trained and competed Aguinaldo's mother Azucar del Viento, so it is only fitting, and we are grateful that the owner sent us her first offspring in hopes on continuing the great tradition!

But feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts about our farm.

Thanks

Thanks Abejita, I found the mare.

She is PR on top but the bottom is unknown to me. I haven't looked her up yet in the PPR stud books, but will try this weekend. However, I found out the sire of this mare was imported from Dominican Republic, so the bottom may be native to DR not to PR.

DR has never established an influential strain of paso themselves. Allot of PPR horses were exported to DR in my time (1972-1976) and used on the DR mares. With the COL wave, now most DR horses are COL or have only a smidgen of PPR left in their lines. There may be some horses hidden in the hills of DR, but I have no knowledge of them.

If it were me, I would look at the mare critically. The lines the mare has are old and as PPR pure as you can get. She may exhibit some gait and phenotype that is almost extinct in PR now. I would want to know that and determine if I wanted to try to perpetuate that phenotype and expression.

It is something I would very seriously consider before breeding her to more modern lines because most PPR lines today cannot avoid Kofresi or an inbreeding to him. There are some horses in the states that are also Kofresi-free and carry old phenotype and gait. Many do not have the brios or the rear impulse--but that can be gotten easily with other crosses.

If this is something of interest, I would look very hard, do a complete investigation, and be slow to decide because there are horses in the states that claim quality bloodlines and aren't. The phenotype and production should be looked at carefully first before plunging into a breeding committment. You must know the qualities of PPR traits or take someone who does with you when look at potential stallions (or their sons) that are from the 1970-ish era.

I have found one, maybe a couple more PPR horses in PR that are Kofresi free and have excellent qualities. Even if the offspring doesn't have the best brios or rear impulse--a Kofresi free offspring born today is very rare and may become a very valuable animal to refresh later. But that is something that may be too burdensome or too serious to contemplate.

All depends on what the purpose of the breeding is for and determine the priorities. If the resulting cross is strictly for personal pleasure without any future plans, I would cross to a more modern line to get a more complete offspring.

Thanks Candice, lots of info there.I got this mare at an open house at Barb P's (not one of her horses) and she knew the mare's mother and sister.I have plenty of horses and really don't need a baby but sometimes I feel like I am just wasting her. She's happy tho, so I'll probably just let her be.I hate the thought of running out of PPR horses!!!!!! I would be interested to know what you find in the stud book. Thanks,Kathi
