Today we had another cowboy mounted shooting practice and we did a couple of rounds on Chinook and Lula. Lula was really good about earplugs so she did even better in the course than Chinook who won't let you put them in. She used to be totally head and ear shy and will now let me fool with her ears as much as I want too but no earplugs. I'l make her some exterior ones for next time.
It was great fun though! Can't wait for the next practice!

It was hot as hades and very dark in the covered unlit arena but hopefully next time we can just set some up! Sorry about that but it was sooo much fun!!! Really nice people! We got home to a power outage though.
Thank goodness after the first bad ice storm last year we bought a generator but it can't power the whole house. Still much better than nothing for the three days we had no power last winter.

Sounds like a blast! I remember a demo for that at the Equine Affaire. Great talent and great horses.

I wanna see!!!!
When you make the external earplugs for Chinook, you MUST take a photo and share. That will be a riot. Have you tried the "Horsey" ones? Cashel makes some foam ones. I've also seen some wooly type ones somewhere.

when ya get really good at it try putting two lines of 6 baloons about 15 ft apart and ride between them fast, hitting both sides at once. u'll have to handle reins with yer ???????? oh just teach horse to ride bridaless.
Just dreemin! never heard of it being done, knowin me though, I'd have to try something different.

Little 'pun' there?? ;-)
Yes Rueben, they do set them up and run them like poles, shooting on either side. I saw this at the demo at Gold Cup.
It does look like fun! Sounds like a great time. Hard to imagine you doing this off the "Rodeo Queen"...she's come a long, long way.

Chinokk was NOT thrilled with the experience but really did amazingly well. She did put on a fino demonstration for all the spectators and they were suitably impressed. I didn't tell them she did that when I made her do something she didn't want to do! She's a NUT!
They did have the pattern set up so you had to shoot off both sides but I didn't do that today because of my ineptness with a heavy 45 caliber pistol, not because of the horse. You wouldn't believe how loud these pistols are and they shoot flames out the barrel about three feet in front of them. It's quite impressive to see how well the horses do and especially ours who have never had any weapon discharged from their riders - only at a reasonable distance from them and they really aren't fond of it. The horse earplugs made by cashel really do work well if your horse will tolerate them. Chinook was adamant that she wasn't wearing them but Lula was fine with them and it helped her quite a bit.
Y''all come! It's great fun!!!
