They left Colorado on Saturday morning (a little later than planned) and got here about noon today. They seem to have handled the trip well and are settling in.
Here's Fiera --

and Mila --

and one of the two of them together --

Fiera looks like she's standing oddly on her left front in that last picture, but it must be the camera angle, or else she moved her foot just as I took the picture. She's standing and walking perfectly normally. She and Mila are so cute together; where one goes, the other follows.

Mila is in the purple halter -- she came from Terry.
Fiera is in the black halter -- she came from Helene.
They spent almost a week together at Helene's before the trip, though, and they are very bonded.

No, Fiera was Helene's. And no, she's not standing funny, just down hill and resting one leg.
They both look great! Sometimes 'double vision' is a GOOD thing! :D :D

Wow, they really do look like they stood the trip well. Don't look the least bit dehydrated or stressed. Good job whoever the hauler was.

Glad to see both mares arrived in good shape! Looks Like Mila sweated up in the trailer...very typical of her...you will probably have to hose her off to get all the ruffles out of her coat!
I'll bet Mila was happy she did not arrive at a veterinarian's! Thats why she hates to be hauled..she had only gone from farm to vet and back again her whole life! Never been anywhere else... ;-)

Yeah, she did, but overall she seems to have tolerated the trip very well. We brushed and combed yesterday, but I thought it would be best to wait a day or two before giving her a bath, just in case she's more stressed than she appears.
Beautiful mares. BTW where are you located?
Southern California, a little east of San Diego (the city).

Yes, they would look good as a team in a parade!

Are they being "good girls" for you Vicky? I would bet Mila will be a bit tentative until she settles in...but I'm SURE she will like being in California...no nasty winter blizzards....

I wonder what they talked about on the trip over.... :roll

Surprisingly enough, she's not being tentative at all, Terry. She seems right at home, and nothing has seemed to faze her a bit. She'd probably get anxious if I tried to separate her from Fiera, though. They're each other's shadow.

Good! Grab her up by the chin and plant a kiss on that muzzle for me... she should be "used" to that.... I've done it a hundred times...
AND...she doesn't mind baths. She doesn't much like her udder cleaned, she might grunt about it...but I do it anyway.
Now...you have lots of time to find a good mate for her...are there some likely candidates in California you are eyeballing?
You can always wait for the PFHA stallion auction if you want to AI...darn good bargains can be had there.... for a first foal...I'd natural cover though...JMO

I agree about the benefits of natural cover. Big problem is that there aren't any Paso farms anywhere close. Natural cover means trailering her several hours away, at a minimum, and then trailering her back the same distance. So I'd guess the risk of reabsorbtion would be high, given her usual stress level when traveling. Unless I send Fiera with her, which I really don't plan on.

Vicki,
I think Capuchero de Calidad, a Capuchino son, is still in L.A area. He is GORGEOUS and has a very nice disposition, I've heard. I used to own a son of his and he was a very sweet and well gaited horse...was shown by my kids when he was 3 years old....If you want, I can get you in touch with Wendy, his owner. She had a special on his breedings this year I think...might extend them???
Fiera looks pretty content. She doesn't mind baths, either.

Capuchero de Calidad was a horse highly reccomended to me by Betsy McHugh, you might want to check him out...as Helene suggests. Is he on the PFHA stallion auction..I wonder.... :?:

Congratulations Vicki! They are beautiful mares - lucky you!!!
Yes, Wendy is extending her breeding special and Capuchero is quite nice - I checked him out and watched him gait...in case I want to breed next year ;-) I was very impressed with him!
Wendy is also very nice and accommodating and she is in Orange County which is alot closer than Los Angeles.
Her email is lovetogait@earthlink.net

I think Capuchero would be thrilled to meet either or both of your girls. He is a sweetie and very gentle and polite with the mares he breeds. I have a beautiful palomino filly from him who was born this Spring and am waiting for my other two to foal in about three weeks - one buckskin who looks a lot like yours and one buckskin dun who used to be owned by Helene. I can hardly wait to see what those babies look like.
Capuchero's babies are good sized, naturally very well gaited and have nice, easy to train dispositions. He has just turned 19 years old and he is still getting those girls in foal first time, every time. Last year we bred him to a 17 year old maiden mare - a pinto - and my vet told me she wasn't in foal, so I sold her to a friend (who happens to be the lady who originally bred her.) Well, this Spring, that mare had a beautiful bay filly - after just ONE breeding on a maiden mare!
I am in Orange County, about an hour North of San Diego (don't know where you are in San Diego) so the journey wouldn't be too far if she came up. And yes, I am still running my "incentive program" on Capo. Since he is getting older, I think it is best to breed him as much as we can while he still is doing the job! Since he was in the stallion auction last year, any baby born from a breeding this year would automatically be sweepstakes nominated. And I am putting him back in the stallion auction at Nationals again as well.
Congratulations on your cute girls!
Wendy

Hi, Wendy! ':hello'
Capuchero sounds great. Disposition is very important to me! How tall is he? Mila is a daintly little thing -- only about 13.1 -- so I can't breed her to a large stallion.

C'mon Wendy...post us a full body shot of him in his prime... doesn't he have some body ticking...on his chestnutty coat?
I remember a shot of him in PFH World once...can you post that one?
THANKS!
lovetogait
08-25-2006, 07:15 PM
He doesn't have any body ticking....he's a dark red chestnut with the metallic glimmer, and his mane and tail are a little bit flaxen. In his prime, he had no white on him at all. Now he has a few "gray hairs" on his face....it happens to all of us! I will find a picture of him under saddle....just figured this all out....be patient!
