Just got this an email today regarding the passing of a Bochica son. Apparently, Ocaso was kicked while breeding and was hit in the neck, rupturing a main artery.
Don't know any more than that. Maybe someone else will have more.
Thoughts and prayers go out to the owners.

Thats a crying shame...I'm so sorry....
The number of living sons of Bochica is very limited as it is....I wonder how many are left now.... El Aquila de San Felipe....is he the only one left?

That's so sad; the owners must be devastated.

That is heartbreaking. Sure lets you see why so many will only do AI now instead of live cover.

That's a shame. I had admired him and he seemed to produce very nice offspring.
Just one reason I hobble my mares during mounting, breeding or collecting. That type of kick could just as well get a person, and do serious damage.... and of course to the stallion.
A mare can be in heat good, and get irritated with a stallion.... and wach out.

What happened to the other stallion?
That's sad though...

Don Gaspar de SantaMonica is alive and breeding (so told about breeding). Bay stallion and very competitive fino horse when young.

Postin may still be around in Colombia, but he's an old man if he is. About 2 years ago, I heard he was still breeding.

Candice Don Gaspar is our stallion's grandfather. Our old mare was bred to Don Gaspar by her first owner for her first foal who was La Jolla de Santa Lucia. She is our stallion, Magnifico de Besilu's mother. I'd LOVE to see some pictures of him. Our stallion is grulla by the way but mom was buckskin colored dun I'm told. I have no pictures of La Jolla either. Our boy does gait like a machine! Great legs too and really smart and well behaved. We got very lucky with him. He's the best ride we have as far as being smooth and push button.

How about Gracioso? I believe he is still around at Riverview.
Although, I know the rumor that he isn't really a Bochica son, which I tend to agree with.

Yes, that is precisely why we quit breeding live cover. Rojo was the perfect gentleman in hand...it was the mares that were the problem. So sad...I would be devastated!

If one is really serious about breeding horses, and one has a stallion that they value...no matter how much monetarily...but value emotionally...it is not that expensive to set up your own AI system.
We found a very good phantom on the Internet from Tack in the Box for less than $1000. You can buy a great set of stocks from Preifert for about $729. Add a few bags of cement, some bolts, and voila...you can install your own.
You can collect semen in a plastic glove (we DO have the AV, but I'm just saying you don't need it if you can't afford it)....and the insemination tubes are about a 1.39 for an insemination. Our equine repro specialist vet taught us how to do it, but Doug also took a weekend seminar at Texas A & M for about $600 a time two years in a row. So the idea that setting up to do artificial insemination is unaffordable is a fallacy! Much less expensive than the loss of a horse. :(

Hmmm..breeding hobbles are cheaper! Doesn't anyone use breeding hobbles? ;-)
