View Full Version : Questions on DNA test

I just received Capri's DNA test kit from PFHA. (I was expecting the "kit" to be more than a single sheet of paper.)
Anyway, these are probably stupid questions, but . . . I'm supposed to pull 60 hairs from the mane or tail. I'm sure I've read that the tail is best for foals, but is there any particular place in the tail that's best? Should I grab 60 hairs at once, or should I do it a few at a time? Does it hurt? (Ie, should I expect him to be mad at me for a while?)
His new, full name is Espiritu Caprichoso!

I have pulled mane hairs, just wrap a few around your fingers - like you would for a regular mane pulling. Have someone distract the young'n if you think it will be a problem. I have never counted the hairs though, LOL, so I might have gotten 60.. or 30. ;-)

I've always gotten mine from the mane. It is much easier for me and I have never been asked to resubmit another sample. I just wrap some aside my ring finger up beween my thumb and pointer and give it a quick jerk. Kind of like how I hold my reins. (Or when you braid and hold the strand you are not working with at the moment). I pull up, hard, and very quickly. The very first time I did it, I tried counting the hair and and noticed I had gotten way more than I thought (or needed). It really doesn't take much. It has to have the white (roots) on the end of the hair. I've never had a foal mad at me afterwards. If you do it quickly, they are so surprised they don't know what happened. I usually did it while I was scratching their withers with the other hand.
By the way, this is sooooo much easier than getting the vet out for a blood sample like we used to a few years back. I remember fighting with one foal....I think we had to lay her down...

yes...now it is a single "piece of paper"..it used to be a kit with sticky stuff that held the hair down...
I take my hair from mane & some from tail...from the dock of the tail, at the top...seems like I get bigger, better roots from tail hair...

You can also grab some with pliers and then pull quickly, or do as in play, they don't even notice. The tail seems in the strike zone to me. I did Rosie's mane.
