I thought we made it through this season without mastitis, but I went out to feed this a.m., and Bianca wouldn't come get her carrots. I thought she was just sore - because they were doing some running last night, so went in - she ate two carrots and still wouldn't move.

So I went and got her grain, she walked over, sniffed at it, and ate maybe one mouthful. I pulled her out of her stall, and had her walking around, she was picking at grass. My first thought was "founder" as she's favoring her right rear so much, so I started feeling her feet for heat or pulse, and looked at her breast....it was so swollen and hot, I can't believe it. She was fine last night.

Call in to the vet, she called back, will get some antibiotics ready for me to pick up and call.....this vet has treated Bianca for this so much, she isn't even requiring me to haul her in...since it's Saturday a.m., I'm estimating that will save me a good $200 in emergency/trip charges. In the meantime, I milked her out, buted her and cold hosed her. She's in the pasture eating some grass. Temp was 104...

Poor little baby - maybe the lack of gnats in TN will help her with this. Sally (my vet) thinks what happens is they get into the opening of the teat and irritate her causing her to milk up.

Wish us luck, hope she feels better soon!

Ah, geez. That has to be painful! I sure hope the cooler TN air will help.
Poor girl. :(

How terrible. My boxer used to get that a lot before I had her fixed. :( She got a really bad infection (on a holiday weekend of course) and had to be IV'd. It lookes so painful.
I hope the TN weather helps her too.

Oh Deb I know you and she both are tired of this. Are you still using the marble to keep her out of season??? How about a bra to keep the bugs out????    Have you tried SWAT on the teats?? I don't know if it would irritate or not. Does she possible have a tiny fibroid tumor?? We have a goat with them who really has problems with one side of her udder.

Tennessee cooler? :shocked I moved to Florida from Tennessee. It's never been nearly as hot in Ocala! I packed in 108 degree temperatures to move here. My refrigerator was tacky from the trip! I'm glad, that we aren't that hot up here!

I'm so sorry, that she's got this again. I don't remember a lack of gnats there. There are probably less though. I hope, that she gets better soon!

Cyndy - I think you were in Memphis? We'll be about 40 miles south of Nashville, Mom was just there....it was about 85 and gorgeous - less humidity. She visited several properties with horses, and didn't see any of the gnats. So hopefully this will help Bianca....plus it gets me out of hurricane alley!

I'm glad, that we aren't that hot up here!

I meant in Ocala as opposed to you if you have gotten over 100. We often hang around 99 here, but I don't think we hit it this year. So many times, I saw, that we were much cooler than the North.

Just to let you all know - Ms. Bianca is doing great. Her teat is almost back to normal, temp was 100.0 this a.m. and she's feeling her oats again. We'll finish out her course of antibiotics of course, but it's great she recovered so quick this time. I think I caught it really early....

That is great news!
I was checking out some property prices online in Columbia...they are pretty good. It was cooler up there when we went in July. Not a lot, but not as humid.

I'm so glad to read this! It's very tiring caring for those sick and injured animals. Watching an animal suffer is disturbing, too!
