I thought we made it through this season without mastitis, but I went out to feed this a.m., and Bianca wouldn't come get her carrots. I thought she was just sore - because they were doing some running last night, so went in - she ate two carrots and still wouldn't move.
So I went and got her grain, she walked over, sniffed at it, and ate maybe one mouthful. I pulled her out of her stall, and had her walking around, she was picking at grass. My first thought was "founder" as she's favoring her right rear so much, so I started feeling her feet for heat or pulse, and looked at her breast....it was so swollen and hot, I can't believe it. She was fine last night.
Call in to the vet, she called back, will get some antibiotics ready for me to pick up and call.....this vet has treated Bianca for this so much, she isn't even requiring me to haul her in...since it's Saturday a.m., I'm estimating that will save me a good $200 in emergency/trip charges. In the meantime, I milked her out, buted her and cold hosed her. She's in the pasture eating some grass. Temp was 104...
Poor little baby - maybe the lack of gnats in TN will help her with this. Sally (my vet) thinks what happens is they get into the opening of the teat and irritate her causing her to milk up.
Wish us luck, hope she feels better soon!
