Star's old pony just shut down this morning and we had to have her put to sleep. I haven't broke the news to her yet. Going to try and find her another one fast.
Picked up Star from her mothers and another swollen eye. Her mother said it was allergies. Of course that is not what Star said. Can you have just one swollen eye with allergies? WOuldn't she get swollen eyes from the animals if she had allergies? And also wouldn't she be sneezing and eyes watering? No one in our family has allergies.
Things need to get better soon.

So sorry about the pony (and of course Star's eye) I may seem to be out of place here ,but you think maybe you should let Star grieve over her pony before running out to replace it?It may backfire and Star might not accept the new pony..maybe let her help you pick the new one?

I'm so sorry about the pony. Generally allergy is in both eyes unless you get something in one and rub it. You don't get any major bruising from allergy although the part under the eyes can look black from allergy. It's very different from a real bruise or black eye though. If she hurt it, it should show bruising.

Andrea, sorry about the pony. As I remember it was an old pony when you got it. I think I agree with Sherri, you should let Star know and grieve for her pony. It will be hard, but much more important she learn just how precious life is.
Sorry about your weekend. :-(

Andrea,
I'm so sorry about the pony. I hope Star copes with it's loss and learns to appreciate the time we have with our animals.
As for he allergies. I would think if one eye was swollen the other should be too. Unless that eye was effected by something by itself. Possibly a bug, or she rubbed it & scratched it, or she could have an infection in her eye.
Just because your family has no history of allergies doesn't mean she won't have them.
They can also develop at anytime. I have been allergic to poison ivy only 2 years out of my whole life. Allergies are just weird.

Thanks. I will let her go look at ponies with me. She has been thru so much lately I hate telling her about the pony. I will have to find the right time to tell her which I don't think is right now.
It sure is hard to find a good pony. But I am sure we will have fun looking.

Don't think you HAVE to look for a pony...a small Paso Fino that has the right temperament would be fine too. I have had 12 ponies, and not ONE of them was appropriate for children (although my best friend had a great one! Grrrrrrr).
Take your time and be VERY careful. They are smart little buggers!

So sorry about Star - poor child to have her reality challenged all of the time. I do hope that she has a part in the process of choosing her next pony, because unfortunately when Nerea was growing up, her first pony was sent on without telling her, and even tho she came back from England to find a "bigger" pony waiting for her - she was mad, and wouldn't ride him for over a year. (btw it wasn't me that did it).

What a lousy weekend, Andrea. I am so sorry to hear your news ... but I agree with the folks who think that Star should be allowed time to grieve over the loss of her pony. It's important. She needs to come to grips with the fact that life is fragile so that she can appreciate it to the fullest.
Besides, as Edurne points out, she might very well simply reject a new pony if it shows up before she's had time to adjust to her loss.
