Same thing as for people. Aloe Vera for the burn.
I use diaper rash cream to help keep my Paint from burning. She HATES it, but it works. A really high SPF, waterproof sunblock will help, too. Or, you can get her a fly blanket that has a sunblock, like a fly mask does.

What Linda said. Aloe Vera is safe if they lick it off too. Then you need a good sunscreen, SPF 45 or higher. I use one on Trooper's nose.

And of course there is always shade.

Aloe to heal, but won't protect.

There are quite a few coat conditioners on the market for horses with sunscreen in them.

Keeping in during the day is your best bet.

HOWEVER, check the pasture for white clover. That kind of clover is high in a type of clorophyll that can make a horse photosensative - the white sunburned areas will get crusty and ugly, may even blacken - that is serious. It can go so far with some horses as to cause liver damage! Copper had a problem with this several years ago, her blaze looked like someone had microwaved it, and she had a lot of hair loss - most of her tail, some of her mane, and bald spots in her coat (she is a chestnut wiht blaze and a few socks) We kept her in during the day, and had her bloodwork checked a time ot two to make sure it wasn't a full systemic reaction.

That may be more info than ya wanted, but hey, its an FYI.

Look for the highest SPF number of children's sunscreen -

Try Libriderm Sunscreen. It is the only product that doesn't break me out, and it's been very good on Trooper for two years now.

We use the long nose Cashel fly masks to protect the face and a flysheet for the body. If they won't keep a flysheet on then the high SPF sunscreen is essential. I'd use it anyway. Vetrolin shine has sunscreen in it but it's use the high SPF children's or baby sunscreen that say waterproof and really slop it on. The lit says we don't use enough to get max sun protection.
