Well that IS interesting. And...I know these folks. Wonder what the price tag is on the Zorse? Oh yeah, I want one - just to look at. Says she jumps - I wonder at what????

Those people sell at KILLER sales...I got a mare from them last year..said they were camp horses but they were at a KILLER sale in the fall...I got a nice leopard app mare for $725 from them in the ring..they wanted like $2500 privatly...I got the app from them in New Holland MD they traveled a long way to sell a trailer full of horses to the killer.

Well...now that you let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. Yep - I have seen them for years in Unadilla with truckloads of horses going whereever the bid may fall. I did not want to say that and get a whole 'nother set of people upset or whatever, but indeed it is not a secret. I always got a kick out of the fact that they would HANG THEIR BANNER on the side of the pens where their horses for sale were. As if ANYONE would be proud to be selling their horses at the meat auction. And to clarify...I have also sold horses at auction - they NEEDED to be there and went "one way". Not to unsuspecting people in the stands.

That is the first time I have seen one people said they rode, and was quiet?! If you see them at the killer sale with the chestnut pony on the bottom right, buy him for me!

There is a sale this Friday and RIDING horses are going for $100 a piece. Garbage horses and ponies are $30 and $40 dollars. Here in the NE if you have not dumped one by now - it's too late. BTW - I have a hunch a paso fino will be going if she is not bought privately before Friday. More than a hunch really.

Tracey - yes, same here. I have NEVER seen one ridden and "quiet"???? I would have to see it to believe it. Somehow I just cannot imagine it, but if the zebra was maybe 2nd or third generation captive/domesticated and a calm, cool mare, then of course it is possible. Physiology is the same so why not be able to get a gentle one? Just never heard of one, either.

Thats sad....wait, so you're saying that they sell them there (at the killer pens) because they need to dump them asap? Just curious...I'm not following this....call me slow, I guess

These auctions are not just for the meat buyers. ANYONE can buy a horse there. I have bought lots myself. THe only difference is that the meat buyers are at these sales and if a "person in the stands"/private individual does not buy these horses the meat man will. HOWEVER - there will soon be NO meatman thanks to various legislation (and let's not go there with our pro/anti opinions, please) and when the meat buyers go the horses will be dirt cheap. AND...who is going to take/buy all these throw-away horses???

People take their horses to auction for various reasons. They need money quick, divorce, no one responds to their ad, whatever. Bottom line is ANY horse auction that has a meat buyer in the bidding ring is a KILLER auction, as Shelley has called them.

Ahhh.....so these ppl (the Strain Family) bring the horses there because they haven't sold?

Exactly...They probably try to sell these horses at home and what does not sell (for many reasons) they take to auction because, like many hacklines. they do not "winter" horses, or winter only the best stock. The other horses go to auction in fall after schools start and the riding camps are closed. These horses have been working hard all summer and let's just say they are not in peak condition. These horses came out of the sale last spring when hacklines buy up stock for their places. Then in the fall (after they use them up) many of the same horses go back to auction. Many of these horses have (and have had) physical and mental problems. Let's face it, if you could get $2500 for a GOOD horse outside a sale, why would you run them through for $500 plus pay commission? I am not saying that some decent horses don't come through an auction. I'm only saying that you had better know what you are doing and even then - you WILL get stung once in awhile, no doubt. And...these days the drugs can stay in a horses for over 30 days!!! The saying used to be, "buy a calm, sane horse on Friday night and come Sunday find out what you REALLY bought". But now, the drugs last over 30 days and many horse traders do not want to hang onto a horse for 30-60 days to find out if the horse is safe or not. But the honest horse dealers dare not re-sell an animal before this lenghty time because their reputation is on the line. Some of these boys (and girls) are chemists. Always remember at auction, buyer beware.
